Luftwaffe Museum Gatow Germany PIC HEAVY!

Post by youth » Sun Sep 23, 2012 2:33 pm

During a recent trip to the Berlin Airshow (pics in airshow section,plugging my own pics ha ha) my good mate Podge & myself visited the excellant Museum at Gatow.If your in Berlin and have some spare time definalty go!
Its out in the sticks a little, to the South West of Berlin, we were stopping at the East end of Berlin,however we still found it very easy to get too,took about hour an twenty minutes on public transport (would have been less but we missed connecting bus an had to wait for next one) one train journey, short bus ride an ten minute walk an we were there,total travel cost 7 Euros,return!!!
For more info on the museum check out the link http://www.luftwaffenmuseum.de/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thanks for looking

Great set of photos from a great place, I could be wrong , but don't they have the last extant example of the Canberra B (i) 8 there ( excluding the ex RAE examples with non original noses ) ?

Really interesting shots you've taken, one thing that's struck me was the evidence of swastikas on the Komet and 109, thought that was quite a taboo subject in Germany.

I'm guessing it's acceptable in museums?

Again great set of photos.

Cheers
Tim

yes Tim63, I thought swastikas were illegal to be displayed in Germany now. Does anyone know for sure ?

Many thanks for comments guys :)
Interesting you mention Swastikas Tim, I know some members of scale plastic model club that attended model show in Germany few years ago an all the models of German WW2 aircraft had Swastikas covered over with masking tape at the request of the organisers.
Me 109 an Me 262 at Berlin airshow didnt carry them yet aircraft at museum do, its real strange
Afraid I dont know why

Fantastic pictures, shame some of the aircraft look a little worse for wear.

Regarding the "swastika", it is my understanding that the Hakenkreuz cannot be shown in public, except for "scholarly reasons". I guess that this being a museum looking at the history of the Luftwaffe, it has an exemption that permits it to display the kreuz, whereas an aircraft flying a display cannot necessarily be considered as being there for educational purposes and, as such, display of the kreuz is banned.
