Re: 13-03-2024

Other than yesterday, have there been any signs of work/inspection since its arrival last week? It seems strange (to me at least) that the USAF don't seem in any hurry to get it back Stateside (they didn't seem in much of a hurry last year either to get the remaining deployment Bone home). People a...

Thanks Max, the problem seemed to be with the starboard inner engine.

Re: Dunsfold Miscellany

A very interesting post from somewhere I never managed to visit. Remember hearing MAC C-133's going in there on the radio in 1971 to collect the first USMC AV-8A's. Later, I think they were roaded to Mildenhall for collection.

Great photos and fashion content!

As I recall Keflavik Connies always used the same callsign when coming to the UK - 'Adola 01'.
I certainly remember the "Adola" part.

Great selection - a very sad time when these beauties were gradually retired. No mistaking where #1 of 48-0612 was taken - RAF Northolt.

Re: EC-121 at Airfete

I went on board it on Friday 25 August'78, the day before the show. It arrived from Keflavik where the AFRES/79thAEWS had an EC-121 detachment until about December'78. Not sure when the 552ndAW&CW E-3's took over the Iceland operation but it was around December'78/January'79.

Great post. I remember C-117D 17171 - it used to be based at Mildenhall in the 60's and early 70's.

Re: C-130 Flights 30th December

Thanks for all the C-130 info- presumably to do with a U-2 diverting to Poland. I'm a bit puzzled about which two U-2s are now Fairford-based. I thought they were '096 and '079, but '069 has also been reported Maybe there was a swap-over on (or around) 22 December? Regards and many thanks to all, a...

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

Some early recollections of Air Refuellable KC-135A's. I first learned that Strategic Air Command possessed KC-135A's capable of being air refuelled during a pre flight briefing at Mildenhall on the 20th of December 1978. The mission was `Coronet Sandpiper` - the return of 1st TFW F-15's from Soeste...

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

Regarding the B-47 yes. RATO was installed to boost thrust. SAC wanted 12,000ft runways in the UK but the UK government would only agree to a maximum length of 10,000ft so they were on the short side by US standards. The internal RATO as seen in that superb Jimmy Stewart film, Strategic Air Command,...

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

I can recall a time when the KC-135's were powered by J57's, so underpowered that they earned an (unofficial) crew nickname 'GLOB' (Ground lovin' ol' b*st*rd)! One particular memory that stands out to me, was during Air Fete 86 at Mildenhall. Just prior to the air display commencing, a fully laden ...

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

Maybe they should read up on what happened to the Valiant when it was forced to go low level. Cracks in the main spar resulted in the fleet being scrapped. Pounding the Mildenhall traffic pattern at low altitude isn't quite the same as high speed over turbulent terrain. It wouldn't surprise me if t...

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

"The training is essential for flying below hostile radar, enabling closer proximity to the front line with increased fuel capacity for receivers". How do they work that out? The lower you fly, in the thicker airmass the more fuel you use - they'd end up with less fuel not more.
