You are absolutely correct, all UK military helis (except Apache E) don't transmit a location so at least 3 ground receivers are required to be within line of sight to triangulate its position. A challenge for all the tracking sites in hilly and sparsely populated areas

Usually somewhere along the route, unless they are flying crazy low which isn't often. ADSBexchange has a better replay but can't link it easily

I haven't been there personally but I'm pretty sure those signs are at most bases as standard, so probably not anything to worry about. Confirmation from a regular needed though

I believe Chinook deep maintenance happens at the Boeing facility at MW along with Fleetlands. ZK554 has been flying from there recently

It always take ages to walk up, especially as it's very feature less so difficult to judge progress. You can also park at the airport and walk through the forest, comparable distance though
