Lee on Solent - Stored ex AAC Defenders

Post by Graeme Hewitt » Tue Dec 21, 2021 10:35 am

A visit was made here on 18th December 2021 & revealed ex AAC Defenders G-BWPR, G-BWPV, G-BWPX, G-CEIO, G-CEIP + one more that had no visible means of identification……..can anyone assist with this last one please ? All were seen outside the south western BN Hangar. Also present was ex AAC Islander G-DLRA.

Slightly off-topic but still related. Does anyone know where ZH005 (I think it might be G-CGVB) now resides?

If it helps, on 9th Dec these where logged by me:
G-BWPR (ZG996), G-BWPV (ZG997), G-BWPX (ZG998), G-CEIO (ZH001), G-CEIP (ZH002), ZH005 (G-CGVB), (G-DLRA) (ZG989).
All GB regs of the Defenders were read from paper in the cockpit windows with the exception of G-CGVB (paper was missing possibly as a result of already being messed with indoors). Happily I managed to read ZH005 under the tape as the sun was in the right position and was closest to the fence (see below).

Looking east over to the new hangars:
G-BWPV G-CEIP G-DLRA
G-BWPX G-BWPR ---------
-------- ZH005 G-CEIO
Fence (airfield boundary)

We visited here today and whilst there are still 7 outside there is one different one. We were only able to identify 4 which were CEIO, BWPV, DLRA and BWPO (not listed above). Hope this helps and any ID on the remaining 3 would be much appreciated.

Are they any good for photos or are they too obscured?

Best place for photos is from the B1134 Gosport rd, take a road called Southways it leads to a small green which has a boundary with the airfield, in the left hand corner there is a gap in the bushes which affords side on views of the Defenders.

I visited on Saturday 5th March and noted seven from Kingsmead Ave. I could only ID four aircraft, DLRA, BWPV, BWPO and CEIO. The latter three from paperwork in the cockpit. If anyone knows the other three I would really appreciate it.

Wondered if anybody has an update on the 7 Islanders (6 together and 1 on its own) at Lee yesterday. 1 had white markings on the tail but unable to identify them. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks Phil

Format edited thus (6 Islanders between hangars with G-DLRA and one on its own to the south)

Looking east over to the new hangars:
G-BWPX -- G-BWPV -- no paper vis -- G-DLRA -- HANGAR -- paper in cockpit (seen from tower)
G-BWPO -- -- (G-CGVB) -- -- no paper vis
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fence (airfield boundary)

No paper visible in G-CGVB but .H..5 could again be seen under tape.

Thank you so much for your help with these. Looking at my photos it looks like there are 7 Islanders parked together plus 1 by the hangar so if anybody could fill the gaps I would be grateful. Once again thanks for your help. Phil

Is that the Maltese Islander that is due out for paint this week? If so do they usually get painted at Lee on Solent or elsewhere?
