Reds Practicing?

Post by JJC » Tue Jun 16, 2020 4:48 pm

Good afternoon, long time lurker but not much of a poster previously.

Are the Reds currently practicing at Scampton? Thinking about having a run up tomorrow and just wondered if it was worth the trip or not.

Is there any sort of time or schedule they run to or is it just as and when?

Thanks in advance and apologies for the very obvious questions but relatively new to the whole visiting bases world.

Cheers

Hi JJC.

Recently, should the weather be suitable, the Reds have been up twice a day.

The first slot is normally between 9-9.30 start time.
They tend to go up for the 2nd sortie around 2-2.5hrs after landing from the first one. Today I'm pretty sure they only went up once between 10 and 11.

Tomorrow has a thunderstorm warning in place from 12 noon onwards, so would expect a morning sortie only based on this, but things can change.

If the weather is not suitable for a 2nd practice they have been using this time for currency flights and emergency practice procedures.

Also worth noting Scampton is NOTAM'd closed 1815 local on the 21st until 0915 local on the 25th next week.

If you have a scanner make sure you have the current tower and ground frequencies in and the Reds air to air of course.

+1 Thanks for the info, and thanks for asking the question. Planning a trip of my own before 'normality' returns!

No worries both, my new 'office' looks directly towards R313 so I see them when they do a 'full' display, can only pick them up on the scanner when they do a flat or rolling.

Feel free to fire any more questions this way, I'll help and advise when I can.

Yes I noticed a comment on the bzzspotters website on Monday that has since been removed saying "On Thursday 18th they [the reds] and the Patrouille de France are due to display over London both departing from BZZ" be glad of confirmation if anyone has any details as to proposed movements. 👍

Looks like it's confirmed then 👍
Can't remember where I read it now, but the info was that the 2 teams were going to split near Brentwood/Fairlop area, so reds turn north for scampton and Pdf right back for France
