Scampton Long Range Radar

Post by Rhubarb » Tue Sep 20, 2022 7:33 pm

On passing Scampton twice so far for Cobra Warrior noticed the radar was parked. Brushed first sighting off as maintenance  Now it's still not revolving on my second pass I'm a lot concerned :O I cannot believe it makes sense to close Scampton due to as l've stated before the whole base is contaminated with diesel. Anyone wanting to build houses will have to pay for the decontamination or covering of the soil ! Or are the MOD stroke us tax payers, picking up the bill :S l thought Scampton was a National Air Defence Reporting Station or some such title ? What happens to this function without a functional Long Range Radar Dish ? It being stood fills me with sorrow, nearly as much as looking at the state of the historic Officers Mess :'( Please can a ground tech press the green button on the star delta star contactor for the revolve motor :D

The radar has been out of action for some time.

The CRC (air defence thing you mentioned) didn't use the dish you speak of, they'd use far more impressive kit for their job. I've also heard that the CRC is now at Coningsby along side the radar operators for Waddo who are also based there now.

The flyable hunters are due out any day, with the Reds final take off and display due by end of the month, with them recovering in to Waddington after that display.

There will be some stragglers from the reds, the final final day is 30.10.22 - all jets have to be out as that's when they paint the white crosses in the runway.

I’d heard Leeming rumoured.

Thank's all, although it's news I never wanted to here :) What about the two Historical Flght Phantoms ? So do we know the MOD's plan for the future, or lack of, it at Glorious RAF Scampton ! It seems over the passed few years what with Covid, Ukranian, and now her Majesty's death ! There is no end to the bad news !

For sale I gather, possibly already been purchased? Last I heard the local authority wanted to buy it and encourage continued aviation use of the site, so fingers firmly crossed for that.

I see there is a group on various social media platforms that claim to want to save Scampton, but it’s become a bit of a talking shop for people who fully believe Scampton should be retained for continued military use - due to some threat of invasion or something but nobody seems to be able to point to who may be posing that threat 🤔🤦🏻. In my view, in spite of our hobby, it must be seen as a good thing, and a fitting tribute to those who served at Scampton (and all of the other airfields during WW2 that are now farms or industrial/housing estates) that these are no longer required for warfare purposes.

Certainly and end of an era, but let’s face it, the place hasn’t exactly been in a usable condition for at least the past 30 years, and has long outlived its original purpose.

I'm assuming that will also include the Bucc & Fitter then?

No idea, would have thought if HHA have moved to Leeming then they may want to Road them up there? Not that they’re ever likely to fly that is. Perhaps someone more in the know will be able to point us in the right direction there?

No idea whether there will be a runway at Scampton in the next five years, but a decision on the future of Finningley is to be announced tomorrow. Scampton would be a decent operating base for 2Excel I would have thought, with a lick of paint and a few infrastructure improvements. Can but hope.

If you are interested in locating radar sites , PlanePlotter has a function which can locate the sites by collecting pings and pulses from aircraft in flight , then zoning in on source of the interrogation.
Rotation rates are calculated by the software.
We can even see which flights are being painted by AWACS when operational.

There can be quite a difference in results between weekend scans and weekday scans when mil sites become operational after a two day break.

The function has been available for many years [Beamfinder ] .
