Voting for IOTM

Post by flyingslug_0 » Wed Jan 09, 2013 1:35 am

Hi all,

This is just a thought. Other sites that entertain a monthly competition invite members to "vote" for their favourite picture by just clicking on the picture. I'm not very conversed on how it works, but I'm sure the powers to be can sort it. I've seen posts with 1500+ views with 10 or less comments. Not wishing to get into a discussion about views=comments, but if a post gets 1000+ views and comes now where near winning the IOTM. Then surely a voting system is not working.

I do like how "VAS ( Valley Aviation Society)" do things, ie the votes can be seen as they come in, also it gives the photographer some kind of closure if his/her pic is a close contender, after all we get to see upto 3rd place!!

These are just my thoughts, I would prefer to press a button rather than send an email.

These photos are very good, worthy of publications and even awards. Its such a shame that its so badly supported, so can we keep it K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid!!)

That's a good idea. They run a similar system on Airshows.be, where you click on the image and rate it - which is hidden until the voting closes. Could that work? Or perhaps a poll?

Surely this month's failure to participate is a Christmas time glitch, has it worked in previous months, I think so!
It is hardly difficult to choose three images and send an e-mail, I can't see an issue personally.

If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

This is actually something we've raised in discussion between staff - it's hardly fair that the competition is judged by a small group of us, and as simple as the email system is - it does require some extra time that you could otherwise use for something more fun.

The forum software does have a Poll function built in, so we could have a poll in which members are allowed to select 3 photos and vote on them. However, allowing the votes to be hidden until the end of the poll (or hidden indefinitely) is only possible with add-ons to the forum software.

We are wary of just having an open poll because of the possibility of members being disheartened if they continued to recieve zero, or very low, voting results for their entry.

However, as always, we'd welcome your opinion on this (it's probably worth having a poll on whether to have a poll.....)

I think we should have a poll...!
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Maybe the administrators could give several options and open it up to a democratic vote by us members, but then, would the vote be taken up??
It's an enigma inside a riddle..
