A while back we produced a Nottinghamshire Aviation Memorials booklet using funds from a Local Improvement Scheme Grant provided by the Nottinghamshire County Council. Printed copies have all gone but we are still able to email out PDF versions, we thought this might be interest for some people during this current lock-down.

Details about how to request a copy can be found in here: http://newarkairmuseum.org/Notts_Aviation

Details added to the museum website about the unit markings that are going to be applied to the F-100 Super Sabre later this year.

Here’s hoping for some interest from the 494th TFS at Lakenheath!

Serial number quoted (ie 063008) seems rather 'dodgy' - try 56-3008?
Sounds good - looking forward to seeing the F-100 in the (not too distant, I hope) future.

Will feed that into the markings team - an interesting point is that on one of the stencil sets templates that I have been copied with, it reads 56-3008 and then shows 0-63008 elsewhere! :S

Back in the 1970s I recall trips out into the wilds of East Anglia and being 'schooled' in the art of USAF numbering and the changes that happened at various times!

I never did numbers properly or indeed took any notice!

We look forward to welcoming you along, hopefully in the not too distant future!!

For at least part of its time at Lakenheath it had "0-63008" below "USAF" on its fin, together with large code "LT" higher up on fin - do a 'Google on photo of F-100D 56-3008 and you will see what I mean.
All the best to all, TM74

This bit from Joe Baugher's fantastic website helps to explain why the '0-' prefix was used. it was also used for aircraft built in the 50s :-

In the 1950s, many airplanes left over from the World War II era were still in service, exceeding their expected service lives of less than 10 years. In order to avoid potential confusion with later aircraft given the same tail number, these older aircraft had the number zero and a dash added in front of the tail number to indicate that they were over 10 years old. It was hoped that this would avoid confusion caused by duplication of tail numbers between two aircraft built over ten years apart. However, this was not always done, and it was not always possible uniquely to identify an aircraft by a knowledge of its tail number. This practice was eventually discontinued when people started referring to the number 0 as being a letter O, standing for Obsolete. The requirement for the 0- prefix was officially dropped on April 24, 1972.

Thank you both for providing additional feedback, which adds to that received from the museum volunteer who has been researching these particular markings. Here is a copy of his feedback that came through this morning:

"Hi Howard,
The correct way of displaying the bureau number is 0-63008, the first zero depicting an aircraft which is more than ten years old, i.e. Obsolete. I have a photo of a 494 TFS aircraft, with LT tailcodes, with its number presented in this way. It too was a 1956 built airframe, and flew with the Unit.
Hope this adds to the interest."

Based on everyone's input I have now revised the content on the museum website to reflect more accurately what will be happening on the tail fin of the Super Sabre once we get out of lockdown. We are still awaiting input from teh Public Affairs department at Lakenheath, which may result in further changes being made to what is being planned.

Now all we await is the confusion caused by us having an aircraft wearing to 'wrong' ID - happy memories of 'WH792' come flooding back! :pop:

Our initial step back to normality starts today, with our first few members of staff coming back after furlough. This is part of a slow process, but this will change a bit more tomorrow with our new Order & Collect system starting as well.

I’ve been asked to say a big thank you to everyone who ordered and collected items from the Museum Shop yesterday as part of the new Order & Collect system; it was a great first day the museum is looking forward to receiving more orders in the coming days!

The service operates on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
