Museum Shop

Post by NAM Updater » Fri Sep 17, 2010 10:25 pm

I know that today’s ‘FC Visit’ hadn’t hit the Museum Shop before I had to leave, but I wondered what the view was about the range of kits, books etc that were in stock?

We definitely hit the shop after you had gone Howard

Personally I think the Newark shop is a lot better than most museum shops for choice of kits and books. But it would be nice to see a few hasegawa kits and possibly a few others makes but thats just me, but other than that I am always impressed by the selection that you do have :thumb:

I did pick up a tropical tamiya 48th spit and another kit for a future group build Im planing with a fellow member :ninja:

I was tempted by the tamiya 48th lanc but I would have had to buy Mrs Viper the whole draw of your little newark bears to have smoothed that one over

Thanks for that Shaun – I know that we’ve had a few minor supplier issues on some ranges and sadly what is sometimes promised on a delivery doesn’t come through correctly; with some manufacturers being worse than others.

We also have a few space issues in the current building but longer term these will hopefully be addressed in the new Visitor Centre.

I’ll try and get the full low down from the Shop Manager. Please remember that you don’t have to pay an admission service just to shop and they will do a limited pre-order and the occasional mail order service. :thumb:

I have some feedback from the Shop Manager, who says:

“I’m always happy to try and get kits through a wholesaler, if people wish to place a firm order. Getting models direct from the importers can often incur a vast outlay, as I have to order such large quantities to get a trade discount. Get them to give me a call on 01636 707170 or via email at namtrading@onetel.com

At least you were able to buy stuff - I'm still a member of the "banned-from-buying-any-models-for-the-foreseeable-future" club. :'(

Was VERY difficult not to be parting with some cash in your shop though Howard, some lovely stuff in there (and not just the kits!). :thumb:

Well it would have been rude not to buy something, and Ive been after a tropical tamiya spit for some time. I also couldnt go home without something for Sarah after I bought a couple of kits.
Still wish I had picked up one of the 48th scale Tamiya lancs though

Hi Ben, I’m sorry to hear about the 'kit purchase ban' – still you know where we are!

As for the Tamiya Lancaster Shaun, I’m sure they’d put it on one side for you!!

No problem - I thought it might be worthwile highlighting the following from the NAM website:

"Our special “shoppers ordering” facility is designed to help you track down specific book titles or those more illusive plastic kits. So if you are looking to break that long journey on the A1, A46, A17, or you are attending a toy fair or collectables event on the Showground then why not pay us a visit? Don’t forget there is no admission charge if you just wish to shop! Ample FREE car parking."

Again thanks for the suggestions – we have a very difficult balance to fulfil with the Shop being the trading subsidiary to the main charitable activity of the museum.

All proceeds from shop sales are covenanted to the museum; so we try not to hold too much stock that is too specialised and sometimes we’re unable to meet everyone’s full expectations. Some suppliers are more helpful than others, but it’s not unheard of to get boxes full of stuff that’s not wanted – just because the stuff you do want is not in stock or late being released; very frustrating!! :'(

I have mixed feelings about the shop. It used to be a real treat but more recently it doesn't seem to be as much fun. In fact the last time I called-in (just to the shop, as I was en-route to another appointment), I was quite disappointed and to be honest I don't think 'd make another specific trip just to visit the shop, whereas I often did in the past.

The range of books is still pretty good, although I think it could be better, with a wider variety of titles. But it's a good selection, and second-hand books are also good. I think it's the model kits section which has lost its appeal. There's a lot of stuff for sure, but there's nothing particularly unusual, and most of what is on sale is pretty run-of-the-mill now, and pretty expensive when one compares the prices with other stockists. I think it would be a far more enjoyable experience if there was a greater emphasis on more unusual kit ranges and maybe second-hand kits too, to balance the range of mainstream stuff.

The stocks of old magazines are nice but they're pretty expensive. For example, Aeroventure often have piles of magazines which are available for virtually nothing, other than a voluntary contribution.

The bit which tends to put me off is the growing amount of general souvenirs and toys which seem to be gradually taking-over the NAM shop. Okay, I'm sure they appeal to the general public but the impression one gets now is that it's more of a general shop for kids than an enthusiast's store. I appreciate that the shop has to cater for all kinds of customers of course, but I'd certainly be happier if there was a little more inclination towards unusual and more obscure things, to compete with the general stuff.

The quoted post from last autumn still largely holds true in terms of the wider brief for the Museum Shop and the range of items that it stocks and sells; to both a well established customer base and the wide range of casual visitors from across the UK and around the world.

Like most retail outlets the stock situation and pricing for kits, die casts and books has been distorted by online sales and is unlikely to ever return to previous times. Sadly the supplier issues are getting worse in all area including book publishers. We do however pride ourselves on being competitive with other comparable aviation retail outlets in the region.

We do occasionally get a good range of bargains most recently this was typified by the range of donated items that was covered on both the museum website and the Internet. Sadly most rare items went very quickly but we still have more than 150 Herpa Wings 1/500th scale civil aircraft (all boxed) and more than 80 Wooster models (boxed and unboxed) left to sell – anyone interested?

As a final incentive to try and tempt the modellers over to Newark Air Museum during this post-Christmas holiday period details have just been posted on the NAM News Page about some NEW deliveries for the Museum Shop.

Please remember that there’s no need to pay to visit the museum if you just wish to shop!
