What happened to the rule about posting hex codes?
What happened to the rule about posting hex codes?
I'm sure, some years ago, there was a rule that if posting data from ADS-B/Mode-S tracking platforms, the aircraft's ICAO "hex" code should be posted too.
This seems to have dropped off recently making it really hard to track things if you don't happen to have a tracking platform open at the time the message is posted.
Could we go back to it please? I very much like putting hex codes in brackets, like this [123456], but that's really only personal preference (and from memory was done because at the time people posted air to air frequencies like this <123.450>!)

Re: What happened to the rule about posting hex codes?
Just scanned through the current rules and there is nothing requiring HEX codes to be included.
Re: What happened to the rule about posting hex codes?
There definitely used to be something, maybe it was just a post in Heads Up & OTT, I guess it was dropped at some point.
Re: What happened to the rule about posting hex codes?
Nothing has been dropped, the rules haven’t really been looked at since the rise of tracking app as the primary way people monitor. They need to be updated.
I agree with the hex going on in brackets though. Will try and tag a note onto the guidelines today

In my opinion the serial should be in brackets or parenthesis as it is assumed, the hex is a broadcast fact or data.

Re: What happened to the rule about posting hex codes?
I’m sure I remember something was said quite a while ago about hex codes need to be used when reporting from a tracking site.
Don’t think it was a rule but probably a request in he heads up section or somewhere.
Shortly after I remember seeing people including hex codes when reporting which hadn’t happened as much before.
Good idea about putting serials in brackets until confirmed.
Can hex codes be wrong on tracking sites?

very often, it's only as good as the backend database used on that website - rubbish in / rubbish out
I'm talking about the HEX to registration or tie-up above - the HEX reported on the site is what the aircraft is transmitting, and that is still prone to errors due to pilots or engineers miss-coding the box
