Wyton could be host to Marshalls

Post by AlistairMarr » Wed Jun 19, 2019 11:59 am

Hi,
There are plans to sell off Teversham (Cambridge) airport for much needed development land. Marshalls are therefore considering a number of alternative airfields for their future needs, which (currently) are RAF Wyton, Duxford and Cranfield. Marshalls have been quick to quash any thoughts of other airport functions separate from there own limited aircraft movements. Presumably, this is to quell any speculation of a regional airport being created and the associated noise and air pollution. RAF Wyton was recently ear-marked for a development of 3,500 homes which fortunately got turned down by the Planning Inspector due to poor transport links and lack of local services (ie hospitals, schools, etc). It currently stands redundant but does have some suitable infrastructure and a strong runway. It makes perfect sense for Marshalls to grab it before it gets planning permission for houses, vehicle storage, etc. If selected it would create much needed jobs and would secure a strategic role as a reserve airfield in case it was ever needed. Let's just hope that Wyton gets a fair crack of the whip and the right decision is made.

I must say that I think Wyton is the front-runner of these three mainly because it is fairly close to Cambridge, which could encourage some of the skilled craftsmen to move with the company. Yes, Duxford is closer, but I suspect that the IWM would not be keen on having the disruption associated with an operation like Marshalls. The runway is very short too, which might preclude the acceptance of work on larger aircraft.

Duxford no longer an option! Between Wyton and Cranfield for the final decision!

Good for Cranfield. Wyton is part of the Bruntingthorpes cox group so just big carpark .

This seems to be a definite indication that Marshalls will move the majority of its aerospace work to Cranfield, despite the caveats aired in the above article. As things stand the management obviously want to keep a foot in both camps!
