Japan Best part of four weeks Nov/Dec 2018 [Complete]

Post by p6025 » Fri Oct 04, 2019 8:32 pm

Later than planned, here are some images from a four week trip to Japan, wrapped around the penultimate Hyakuri air festival to include Phantoms. Obviously a popular time and reason to visit, bumped into a lot of very familiar faces along the way. This post covers the first week, having arrived into Haneda we collected our hire car the next morning and drove down to Nagoya to start the trip properly at the Gifu airshow.

Saturday 17th Nov - Gifu - Having had a leisurely drive to Gifu we missed any morning action there was to be had, but caught the Blue Impulse practice in the mid afternoon.

Image

Sunday 18th Nov - Gifu - The usual early start to get parked southside of the airfield, near the Kakamigahara museum. Then watched the morning displays from the fields along with the usual crowds of photographers. Waited till the queue for the shuttle to the northside died down and headed over to snap the static. Was a little surprised just how crowded it was inside. Shot what we could and headed back to the bus asap, so we could be outside for the final flypasts which close the show on the approach. Unfortunately the light wasn't anywhere near as good as the morning.

Monday 19th Nov - Iwakuni - Arrived to grey sky and R02 in use, not ideal. A relatively quiet day, especially the JMSDF, just to complete the disappointment.

Tuesday 20th Nov - Tsuiki - Started at the seawall, in reasonable light, and caught a decent amount of action including display practices of a pair and a four-ship of F-2s. Less light in the afternoon and they changed runways, so we shot the usual chute-shots.

Wednesday 21st Nov - Nyutabaru - Started at the north east taxyway, in fairly grey weather, moved to the south east approach at the local shop/cafe, then to the south west. Pleasant bonus at the end of the day were two waves of F-15s from 203 at Chitose arriving, and night stopping enroute to Naha.

Thursday 22nd Nov - Nyutabaru/Kanoya - A local no-fly day, but we had all the 203 Hikotai F-15s depart in the morning. After which we headed off down to Kanoya for the rest of the day.

Friday 23rd Nov - Nyutabaru/W&R - A public holiday across the country, planned for a leisurely drive up to Tsuiki taking in a few W&R enroute. On the way to Shintomi (small town east of Nyutabaru) we saw two F-15s depart. So headed their instead. Turned out there was a festival in Shintomi and the pair of F-15s were for a flypast. Watched them return and then headed off to snap the W&R.

Saturday 23th Nov - Tsuiki - The families day, typically provides an almost complete preview of the public event the next day. So as usual a very popular place to hang around. This year any parking close to the seawall area was barried off, but it was possible to park next to the other side of the river, near the fishing boats. Spent the morning there, then headed off back towards Nagoya as we would do the Hamamatsu air festival instead.

Very nice Paul, but I had to laugh at your later than planned comment as I sit still working through my 2017 Japan trip photo's, most of which are getting looked at for the first time still....see you in December no doubt!

The second week of the trip. This was again all as planned, and in pretty good weather.

Sunday 25 Nov - Hamamatsu - The public air festival day, we decided to stay outside (southside), forgoing the static, to catch the displays in the best light - the public area is northside. Excellent weather all day, but a lot of the displays seemed a little high and distant. As is usual with such events, the bulk of the displays are in the morning, with the Blue Impulse early afternoon. Got on the road as soon as the Blues were finished as we had a bit of a drive back up to Mito and meet up with the fifth member of the team, who just flew in.

Monday through Wednesday 26th-28th Nov - Hyakuri - Reflecting a bit of a wind down in ops, or simply just air festival preparations and practices, not the busiest days, with a late start on the Tuesday/Wednesday, probably due to evening flying the night before. Still it was good! With the odd display practice thrown in the mix,

Thursday 29th Nov - Iruma - Picked this day for a run out to Iruma. Probably what you'd call a tyoical day in decent light. We missed out on the RC-2, which had been operating from here for a few weeks though.

Friday-Sunday 30th Nov-2nd Dec - Hyakuri - The Friday typically is normal ops in the morning, then things quieten down as they lay out the ramp with static/etc. and some of the visitors arrive. Saturday was the invite only friends and families day which typically is the same display schedule as the public day - all in good light. The roads close to the base are already closed to the public, so a case of parking up and walking closer. Sunday was the public day and this year there was no public car parking provided. On the Saturday we managed to locate somewhere (maybe 1km from the gate) where we reserved a parking spot - and arrived there around 5am Sunday. After a small nap/breakfast in the car, we headed off to the main gate to join the queue to get in. Sadly the weather on Sunday was cloudy and grey. Frankly avoided the worst of the crowds inside, and actually left relatively early. Dropped of two of the team at Haneda and downsized the vehicle for the remainder of the trip.

The third week of the trip did not go as originally planned. It was obvious the forecast for almost everywhere was bad to diabolical, so instead of heading down to the Nagoya area to hit Akeno, Gifu, Komatsu, etc., we ended up staying in the Tokyo area. The forecast being just slightly less bad for the Tokyo area...

Monday 3rd Dec - Iruma - Started the day at the bottom of the hill on the SW side of the airfield to catch the usual taxy out shots, then moving once they changed ends to the NW corner for primarily landings. Personally I remember this most for "coming a cropper" off my steps bigtime - a first for everything...

Tuesday 4th Dec - Tateyama - Actually started the day at Atsugi, but move on quickly to Tateyama, a small JMSDF base which houses 21 Kokutai with the SH-60K. It would appear that UH-60J previously on dedicated SAR duties are now flying under the 21 Kokutai banner. As the JMSDF are due to loose their dedicated SAR to the JASDF, this is presumably one step in the process. Not the busiest base, so once we had snapped the handful of active aircraft in superb light we headed back to Mito.

Wednesday 5th Dec - Hyakuri - Back for more of the same, as to be expected, just less of it. Again in fairly good light.

Thursday 6th Dec - Hyakuri - As I took no images, this must have been a weather write off.

Friday 7th Dec - Hyakuri - Flat grey day, with the highlight probably being the 302 white special heading off to participate in the Naha air festival over the weekend. A bit of a bonus was the Iruma based flight checker YS-11Fc coming in (maybe they were short of T-4s that day). In another sign of the times, the RF-4E (#914) make its final sortie to pretty much end the day.

Saturday 8th Dec - Ibaraki - sight seeing along the coast in grey weather, ending in showers...

Sunday 9th - Gyoda & Ota - A couple of preserved T-1, the first outside a Subaru factory and the second (the last produced T-1) outside a cafe, but sadly full prepared for being outside all winter.

Image

Image

Monday/Tuesday 10-11th Dec - Hyakuri - back to the original plan we had our last couple of days at Hyakuri. Highlight of these two days for me was the period that 302 flew three Phantoms performing what looked like strafing runs.

Hi Ross, those last few were three aircraft performing strafing runs along R03 right, pitching up and banking east, shot from by the main gate, rather than the usual spot near the 7-11.

Parking spot, can I tell you December 2nd? There were a number of places doing parking around the base. We reserved a place on Saturday for the Sunday. Told a couple of other groups of mates who were able to turn up Sunday on spec at darn early o'clock and got parked in the same area. As it turned out aside from the usual road closures they didn't seem too bothered about people 'abandoning' their vehicles up any old track or field.
