French invasion of Devon

Post by Pauld339 » Thu Jun 05, 2025 2:35 pm

In the hope of catching some of the French amphibious action I headed yesterday to Braunton Burrows. More in hope than expectation - I was expecting distant views but no real photographic potential. But with Kev's help (thanks mate!) I arrived exactly where the main beach assault came ashore. It was surreal, to say the least, to be in amongst the soldiers as they went about their business.

At that point, helicopter top cover was provided by a pair of wildcats which, predictably, stayed high. But in the afternoon they were replaced by a pair of French Tigres which I was desperate to catch. Again they were just circling high, as you would expect of top cover. No chance for decent photos. After a LOT of walking through sand dunes we came across a pair of Spanish JTAC who were controlling the Tigres. Amazingly, the Spanish radioed to the Tigres and asked them to descend to our position and give us a bit of a show! One of those things that I'll never forget.

Great shots Paul
Thanks. Wish I’d reduced the shutter speed but it was really windy!

Very interesting set of photos. Not an opportunity we get too often on these shores.
Well done
