Indian airforce at Coningsby.

Hello Everyone,

Not posted on here for a long time due to change of work, not much of a chance to get out with the camera these days so I jumped at the chance of a trip to the Loop on Tuesday. Bwlck was full so went to Bluebell and sat all on my own for 6.5 hours with nothing but wind and rain for company so at 15.30 after the rain I headed down only to be car parked by a Hawk (my luck as usual). Got home and was miserable all evening. Wife got me to go to Coningsby the next morning and I'm glad she did, met Colin and Neil on the mound and tagged along with them for the day and had a ball. Weather was pants with cloud all day and rain in the afternoon but the action was great. I know they have been done to death but heres my take on the SU-30's and hope you like them.

Absolutely love that blue glow on the Sukhois. Some lovely photos of the jets, pity the light wasn't great.

Nevertheless, you're getting more shots of the jets than I will be! Hope to catch you soon mate.

Cheers,

Jack.

Why are the afterburners blue on the SU30s? Is fuel injected into the jetpipe differently or are the SU30s engines that inefficient that there is enough excess air in the exhaust gases to burn the fuel that is injected!!

Couple theories:

1. The 'normal' engine stages consume less oxygen than Western set-ups leaving more oxygen for the afterburner stage, ensuring more complete combustion of the fuel. Therefore no soot and no yellow in the flame.
2. More air is added to the engine after the turbine stage but before the afterburner, again allowing more oxygen to be available for the afterburner.
3. The afterburner fuel injection is at a lower rate, so there is enough oxygen left in the exhaust gas to ensure complete combustion of that fuel.
