Surprise visit from C-160D 'Retro Brummel'

Post by Reaper02 » Sat Oct 16, 2021 12:30 pm

Although I was under the impression the very last German Transall mission where flown two weeks ago and they were retired suddenly this colorful C-160D showed up at Eindhoven last week. It made a very last visit to the EATC (European Air Transport Command) and after just two hours it departed again with the heavy rain made it an even sadder moment. Auf Wiedersehen und Dankeschön Transall! :'(

I have fond memories of them dropping off the weekly beer supplies at TTTE Cottesmore back in the 80s during my first tour in the RAF, especially as I was on 'A' Squadron (the German squadron)..........

I always liked seeing Transalls, I remember seeing one at Heathrow in May 1988 parked in the cargo area. One of my old schoolmates was in the RAF and spent three years based at Brawdy. He saw practically the whole German fleet when he was there, as the German Army used to train their tank crews at Castlemartin, they were regular visits in connection with this and sometimes there would be three a day visiting. But it will be sad to see them disappear, maybe we'll see more A400s.

Very nice, the Germans know how to do retirement schemes.

Farewell Transall - Northolt from the fence in the 80s, for me. One would always come in as I was walking from the tube.
