A340, F-35s, C-40: How to drive 900km for one A340 which landed in my backyard

How we drove 900 kilometres for one aircraft which landed in our backyard the following day.

This Wednesday I really set my mind to see at least one of the German Air Force A340s before they will retire this year. I picked up "The Apprentice" from his home and then drove to Eindhoven to pick-up "The Football Junky” and together we arrived at Köln-Bonn at 9AM. We waited and waited and the result was: One USAF C-40, One Global, Three A319s, a lot of heatwaves but no A340.

Next stop was Spangdahlem for the evening departure of 2 F-35s at 17:00, followed by one KC-10 and then two more F-35s at 19:00. Meanwhile we met “Mr Key” who told he heard rumours that one A340 might come to Schiphol the next day. Really?

So we drove home and arrived at midnight. And wow, would you believe it: The 16+01 arrived at the afternoon practically in our backyard. So all got well at the end. Happy!

I’m glad it worked out for you in the end, and at least you picked up some nice shots during the chase.

Thanks for sharing these, an interesting and varied selection. I went to Koln a few years ago and over a couple of days, managed to get shots of most of the FBS fleet. I must go back for the A350s when they get them all, plus the A321s.

Very nice Frank. You were lucky to make all the aircraft you wanted to photograph. Well done. I hope I will still see 16-01 in time.
