Mic's 2024

Post by Mictheslik » Mon Dec 23, 2024 1:48 pm

Having been amazingly behind on editing, I thought I would peruse this year's massive backlog and pull out a small selection of shots from a hectic year. A small selection turned in to almost 50, when I realised I had been on far too many trips this year, but only 1 UK show. I hope you enjoy some previously posted, but also unseen shots from my lengthy lightroom queue!

The first aviation content of the year was taken from my home office window (which gets 2 or 3 passes a week...but none normally as good as this!)

I then got out for a couple of days in the loop (my only low level this year) and caught my first Texan (shows how little I get out now...) and a rather nice French C-130.

Roll on to May, and my first proper show of the year. At short notice I made the trip out to Zagreb to pay my respects to Europe's last flying MiG-21s. It was a small affair, and I regret not walking around to the other side to avoid the backlighting, but it is always a pleasure to photograph a MiG-21. The static jets were also welcome, as were the other small selection of Croatian assets.

One massive highlight of 2024 was getting married...fortunately my brother lives in Miami, so a stag do was arranged to coincide with the Miami Air Show...

In July I did my only UK show - a day at RIAT:

At the end of August I ventured in to Europe yet again on a double trip to cover the Bucharest International Airshow and Zeltweg. First up BIAS - as usual the night show was superb.

Then on to Zeltweg for the first time since 2013. Again, not a vintage AirPower, but it was an enjoyable 5 days of catching up with old friends and relaxed photography (except trying to move locations on Saturday!) The spotters package was superb, with plenty of access and good facilities. The very wet Friday made for some dramatic photos as well.

Of course, any mention of AirPower 24 cannot gloss over the absolute highlight - Argonauten. Months on I still look at photos from this finale and wonder what the person who came up with it was smoking...Some good helicopter action though.

My final trip of the year was the big one - a long planned honeymoon to Australia and New Zealand (via Taiwan). My very understanding wife was open to a few hours at Hualien as we passed through resulting in a spectacular night launch of 5 Mirage 2000s and 11 F16s. Difficult and challenging photography!

Went out again the next morning in the hope of catching the last RF-5Es. Was not disappointed!

Then on to New Zealand with a few hours to kill before our flight from Christchurch, I spent a bit of time at the RNZAF Museum, which was briefly visited by an NH90:

And finally, the last exciting spot of the trip (and the year) was this LC-130 at Christchurch airport:

All in all a bit of a ridiculous year travelling the world in search of aeroplanes. Thanks to everyone who I've bumped in to or chatted with, and here's to a great 2025!

Merry Christmas,

Good set of images - those RF-5 shots are particularly nice.

Possibly the post of the year! The low angle shot of the chequerboard Mig is my favourite.
