Middle Wallop 1992 Part Two

Post by papadolmio » Sat Jun 13, 2020 5:52 pm

Last lot for a while....

For many the star of the show was the RNZAF UH1H

Which arrived by C130 (which made a right mess of the grass runway btw)

All the way from Switzerland in an Alouette III would have been an adventure in itself

Not really military but interesting to compare what a EH101 looked like 18 years ago

Great stuff! I remember seeing the Kiwi Huey and Herc in '88. Back then you just turned up at the show never really knowing what to expect. I was blown away when I realised they were from NZ, as from a distance with the Red blue roundels and green/grey camo I thought the RAF had bought hueys!

Surely it was the Hawk!!

Sorry to hijack another of your threads - but I was there too. I seem to remember the weather being pretty awful on Saturday, but clearing up later and a scramble to resurrect some of the earlier slots - including me. Fortunately I hadn't repaired to the beer tent and we were bundled off the Lyneham in an AAC Gazelle. It was so rushed that I hadn't really sat down and thought out how I was going to get there, and had no plan to get back!

Was the C130 picture taken after the weekend - I seem to remember it being stuck on the runway, sunk up to its belly? Don't suppose you have any pics of the Hawk?

Hi , Sorry- No joy on the Hawk I'm afraid :(

I must admit I tended to avoid flying shots at airshows, primarily because of:
a. My camera kit wasn't really up to it.
b. The end results never seemed to reflect what I was seeing in the viewfinder!
c. Slide film was flipping expensive! (If only we had digital back then)

IIRC the weather was pretty rubbish and the C130 did make a right old mess of the grass strip, which I think was around the Monday or Tuesday before the show. It did take them a while to get it out- eventually doing a 180 and taxying back up the ruts to where they started. It made so much mess that we had to remark the runway ( a career first and last) due to the ruts before flying could start again- goes without saying if a chippie had stuck a mainwheel in, it wouldn't have been pretty.

Finally, I think you're right that the statics were taken on the Monday.
