Flying Dutchmen

Post by 3Greens » Wed Nov 18, 2009 9:10 pm

Its a shame that all of this is now long gone. Fantastic Dutch NF-5s and Fightertown UK - Binbrook!
316 Sqd. brought 4 single and 2 two seaters over to visit 5 Sqd in May 1985.
The weather was misty and grey for much of the visit, leaving the aircraft hangared - it wasn't brilliant on departure day.

It was all a bit tight ..

Did'nt one go U.S. and get left behind at the end of the detachment? I remember seeing one in the corner of 5 Sqn's hangar with RAF roundels and 5 Sqn markings!

You're dead right, K-3050 stayed behind for an engine change. Didn't catch it in 5 Sqdn. marks though - but I guess that would have been typical -
if its not nailed down leave your mark on it !

Hope you don't mind me adding these. Can't remember if posted them on the old forum or not. Not brilliant scans but you may find them interesting.
All taken at Binbrook between 1983 and 1987. Got some more somewhere, I'll try to find them and get them scanned.

Thanks for the extra 'on base' shots. A little story that I hope may interest with regard to the Belgian F16 pic.
The 349Sqd Belgian F16 exchange with 5 Sqdn. was particularly memorable as on my visit to the squadron on 19th March 1984,
the detachment was visited by Major Verbist (who arrived in F-16B FB-08) I discussed with him that I had recollection of his
ejection from Lightning T5 XS455:T 5Sqd. while on exchange posting posting back in Sept 1972. - 349 Sqd only brought 9 Starfighters
on that occasion ! Pilot Sq.Ldr. Tim Gauvain came down near the caravan sites along fromWithernsea while Lt. Robert Verbist came down in the drink.
Tim Gauvain had the misfortune to suffer a 1" spinal compression but miraculously returned to flying the following March 1973, by coincidence
Lt. Verbist did also. He turned up on 28/3/73 in his F-104 (FX-54) for a small reunion.
