RAF Museum, Hendon 2022 - *01Dec22*
First visit to RAFM Hendon since the 22nd February 2020. No changes in Hangars 1 to 3 but biggish ongoing changes in hangars 4 & 5. In H4 the AW101 Heliliner has gone, hooray, but to get it to the roller doors in H5 behind the Lancaster and outside, they have had to move the BoB fighters in front of the Lancaster to the sides and there is a big empty space in H4 in front of said Lancaster. The most changes have been in H5. The circular air-to-air refuelling display by the Victor nose has gone, the church in a container and Princess Mary’s RAF nursing display have gone. The bomb damaged diorama that was in the corner by the He.162 has gone and the ‘Control Tower’ opposite the B-17 has gone which would make it easier now to move out the B.25 and Fw.190 as they are up for disposal. I believe there are other airframes coming from Cosford to fill the voids. Just a few record shots and angles I couldn’t get before taken with my little 20MP shirt pocket friendly Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100 M3 camera.

Re: RAF Museum, Hendon - 5th January 2022
Thanks for sharing these, a few years since my last visit. I'm still wondering in what direction the museum is heading. I know that there was this plan for a new Battle of Britain Museum, but that seems to have quietly disappeared. I always thought the EH101 looked out of place, but it will be many years before they are likely to get a Merlin. Of course, they might decide that they don't want one. It will be interesting to see where the FW190 ends up, being a two-seater, a bit of a rarity.

Hi Brian
Had a trip there 2 years ago and there have been a lot of changes in even that short time period
Your little pocket camera has done a great job
Thanks for posting

Just a couple more record shots of the Fw.190 and a start has been made on dismantling the B-25.

I really should make the effort to return to Hendon. The last time I visited the place was in 1972 just after the museum had first opened it's doors. I was fourteen then on a coach trip organised by the Merseyside Aviation Society(MAS), long gone now. Funnily enough Hendon RAF Museum featured on Blue Peter with Valerie Singleton the night before we set out. It wasn't a particularly large collection at the time of my visit, it's certainly evolved over the years.

I first visited the museum not long after it opened. There were 37 aircraft on display then. Of those, just 19 are still there. The Beverley was sadly scrapped about 30 years ago and others were passed to other museums or sold off.

The EH101 is out round the back of the old Milestones of Flight (or between that and the old stuff in the closed GW hangar) building at the minute. Mostly covered over!
Seen from the mainline train tracks yesterday

Incase anyone has not seen the Beverley before this was taken in 1986Mustang531 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 2:48 pmI first visited the museum not long after it opened. And some more record shots of the Fw.190 and B-25. The Spitfire and Hurricane are in a temporary display together in the space in front of the Lancaster and the Fiat has been moved from between the Phantom and Tornado and parked next to the Bf.109. In the order taken.

And even more record shots of the dismantling of the B-25. The only other change noted since my last visit is that the Gazelle and Hoverfly are parked next to each other.

Some interesting shots. I understand that the two-seat FW190 is going out on loan to a museum in Berlin. The EH101 seems destined for the Helicopter Museum down at Weston-Super-Mare, itself always worth a visit.

New exhibit arrived in the last couple of days in the shape of the Westland Lysander from Cosford...

RAF Museum, Hendon - 23rd February 2022
A few more record shots of the changes in H5. The B-25 and 190 are still awaiting collection. After just over 6 years, Westland Lysander Mk.III(SD)/JR-M/ R9215/No.161 Squadron in a Special Ops colour scheme has arrived back from Cosford and Fairey Battle MK.1/L5343 has had its wings detached as that makes it easier to move to a new location in H5.

Can anyone please tell me why the FW190 and B25 are going?
It seems sad to lose them!

Great set of images and update, thanks for the info', I must visit soon
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!

Re: RAF Museum, Hendon 2022
Lots of people are asking why they're going and there seems to be all sorts of reasons. Duplication of type, relevance etc. Considering there's some machines in store, some of which have never been restored for display and yet there's some significant types that are available. But they've got to go to an accredited museum and seemingly kept under cover. Sadly not all the museum's in the UK are able to do this, but they can go overseas on loan. From what I've been told by a reliable source, other major museums are also looking to thin out their collections. No doubt more will come to light over the coming months.
