Marham memories.
Marham memories.
Marham being my local base for all of my years has allowed me to visit many times. The first couple of shots are from 1977 - back then, as a 15 year old, my Agfa camera wasn't any good for aircraft, but it's the only shot I ever got of a Hastings in the air. The first B-52 was taking part in Giant Voice in 1979. the B-52D was one of three visiting in 1980. The rest were taken throughout the eighties, plenty of variety back then with the Britannia and A-7s being real treats. In 1986, the Canadians brought 6 Hornets and a CT-133 for a squadron exchange. To show how times have changed, I was the only enthusiast around on the afternoon I went to see them as was the case when most of these were taken! Apologies for the image quality but hopefully you'll find something of interest.
Sid.

Fabulous... wide variety, and quality... We were so lucky up in Norfolk in those days.

Not to worry about the quality, it's the subject matter that counts here and there's some absolute gems amongst them. Like many, I too didn't have a good camera when I was young, just a Kodak Instamatic which used cartridge films. Somewhere I've got several prints of mixed quality, maybe I'll find them one day.

Wow, amazing variety,
Was this all just outside base visits or are there some airshow ones squeezed in? - for example the Victor and Phantoms.
Enjoyed viewing them - thanks for sharing.

Re: Marham memories.
Excellent pics, so many memories brought back there. Thanks for sharing!
Re: Marham memories.
All taken from outside Kev. I'm not sure, but I think the Victor and VC-10 trailing hoses plus the Victor/Phantom combo might have been when the base hosted a defence evaluation meeting which wasn't open to the public. I have a date of early September 1986.

WOW!
Now that was a blast from truly memorable times; some truly memorable gems with great colour schemes and not forgetting the wonderful sounds of those old engines.
Many thanks for sharing such nostalgic pics

There was an Open Day in September 1986 which I attended, I think it clashed with one of the public days at Farnborough. It was Victor heaven though, one was on display in a hangar mounted on jack's with the undercarriage retracted, quite impressive.

A cracking nostalgic set of memories and thanks for sharing. Marham was always re-known to not see many visitors and I think the same goes for today, particularly back in the eighties when other bases such as Coltishall saw many. As a fellow Norfolk spotter we only went to Marham if there was an exchange or similar happening. Perhaps you have just proved me wrong.
Re: Marham memories.
Many thanks for posting - I was stationed at Marham back then on the Canberra OCU
The B52's came for the bombing competition,I had an interesting visit inside one whilst at Marham

Interesting photos. What's the story with the center Canberra in the first photo? It appears to have a non standard nose. I know various aircraft have been used for radar trials and as radar trainers, but don't recognize that nose profile.

Re: Marham memories.
That Canberra with the extended nose looks like a T.19 to me, can anyone else confirm?
Re: Marham memories.
No, you're spot on. I recall biking the 8 miles or so from home one school holiday, probably 1976 or 77 and seeing one movement all day. Even an exchange could prove fruitless, as a visit to capture four Italian F-104 yeilded nothing when they remained in the HAS during my time there, but at least I had a car by then so the disgruntled mumblings didn't last as long on the journey home.jpickers56 wrote: ↑Fri May 13, 2022 10:09 amA cracking nostalgic set of memories and thanks for sharing. Re: Marham memories.
Great post, thanks.
Yes, it is a Canberra T19 (T.11 Airborne Intercept trainer with radar removed).
One of my rare visits to Marham was a Friday before 1978 Greenham Common. Took lots of Victor approach shots only to find next day (starting down a long line of Hunters) that the film kept winding on and on.... doh !!

There wasn't a Greenham Common show in 1978. The one with the Hunter line up was 1976, perhaps that's what you are referring to.
