Tonka's at the Fire Training HQ - Moreton in Marsh

Post by mark edwards » Mon Jun 27, 2022 3:59 pm

I had heard there were a few Tornados' here and you can see them on Google Earth etc so I thought I would take a look. Any histories appreciated.
Also there is a very mill-dewed high wing Cessna partially hidden in trees - again any info welcome. Thanks

Thanks all

A bit of quick internet searching points me at G-AZDZ as the Cessna that is still on site

Seems odd that ZG773 is coded 074 as that was ZA612's code, a tail swap maybe?

I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Tornado F3 ZE165 still survives as it was one of the most interesting jets in the F3 fleet serving at all three Air Defence bases and also in the Gulf War. Originally delivered to 229 OCU @ Coningsby in '98, it was then transferred to 111 Sqn. up @ Leuchars when they converted to the F3 and then modified for Gulf War service @ Leeming to where it returned in '93, serving with both Sqns. In '96 it was selected as the F3 Display jet receiving enhanced XXV Sqn. mks comprising the fighter bar 'glitterband' in silver and black on both nose and fin and ZK code letters (the unit's wartime code letters). After three seasons display duty it was again transferred to Leuchars where it acquired 43 Sqn's code letters (still visible). It was placed into storage in '08 which is how it escaped the Reduce To Produce programme. Here is a pic of it in its display mks.

Hi Mark.
Any clue as to locations to view these as I'm embarrassed to realize that ZG773 was one of only 4 GR4's that I never saw, the other 3 were RTP at Leeming. This leaves 773 as my last chance of bagging an ex RAF Tornado in the UK.

Hoping that you can get on the College grounds at weekends?

No access onto the site - photos through the fence - easy access off public road - aircraft clearly visible on Google earth
Hope that helps
Mark

Hi adderman. If you'd like to list serials of the trio you're missing I'll see if I have any pics of them.
