Holiday Snaps - Yorkshire coast early 80s

Post by F3 » Sat Jul 02, 2022 8:58 pm

Back in the '80s the Yorkshire coast was a little known Mecca for plane spotting. As my parents had a caravan @ Bridlington we spent quite a lot of time there incl a midweek break in Oct '82 while a Priory Exercise was in progress. The main reason for all the military traffic was the proximity to the Cowden Bombing/Gunnery Range which was just 12 mls down the coast. On exiting the Range a/c would fly over the wide Bridlington Bay and make landfall either over the South Shore clubhouse, which was an unmissable landmark, or Flamborough Head, further north. In the early 80s the main customers were Buccs, Jags, Vulcans, A10s and F111s. The Vulcan was caught on a bombing run during Ex Priory, the Bucc + Canberra from the caravan and the assorted SAR Wessex either @ Flamborough Head on a Trng. Ex or patrolling the beach @ Brid. Today you're lucky to see a single a/c esp since the Tucanos left Linton.

Very interesting images Mick. Thanks a lot for sharing them. I also like the Wessex shots most, so colorful.
