Back in the Day - Fast Jet Fest @ Ch. Fenton

Post by F3 » Wed Jul 26, 2023 6:06 pm

I am now well on with the next book, on the Church Fenton airshows and have begun sorting out the pics from my collection. Here is a selection of some of the best heavy metal seen there down the decades taken at airshows, Graduation Days, Friends & Families Days and exercises. As regards the 1st. shot; of the Jaguar formation, can anyone confirm that I'm right in assuming that the store carried under the forward fuselage is a practice bomb dispenser which cannot be fitted in the usual place due to the recce pods?

Hi Michael
You will be pleased to know that XT864 J the 111 Phantom in your post has survived and has been restored in it's original Ark Royal colours by the Ulster Aviation Society.

Just for info, the German Alphabet is 4020 (not 4620) and was from JBG-43.

Ref the Jaguars - they are CBLS (Carrier Bomb Light Stores) on the centreline pylon. The recce pod (of those days) could only be carried on the centre line - or there was a centreline pylon which could take 2 stores in tandem, eg bombs or CBLS, or a single fuel tank.

Those aircraft each have 2 CBLS on the centreline and fuel tanks on the inboard wing pylons.

Thanks for all the info guys. Nice to know someone's been paying attention! Hope you enjoyed looking as much as I've enjoyed posting.
Twinpin - Is XT864 the former Leuchars gateguard?
LimaHotel01 - Any idea where JBG-43 was based - Husum?
Stickshaker - Don't know if it's rare but that was the only time I've ever Jags in that stores fit.
Some of these pics are likely to end up in the Fenton airshows book I'm currently working on which is likely to be available in time for Crimbo.

Probably not that common but it was always a toss up between maximising the number of bombs vs carrying enough fuel. This was all pre-GW1 so not much tanking and mostly low level bombing.

Centreline stores created some handling limitations, so the day-to-day fit was 2 tanks on the inboards and CBLS on the outboards for training. 'War' fit was ECM and chaff on the outboards, tanks on the inboards, and 2 bombs on the centreline (or a recce pod). Or you could have a centreline tank and up to 4 bombs on the inboards with 2 on each inboard pylon on a tandem beam. In the mid 80s we got AIM9 on the outboards, and later (post GW1) winders over the wings.

I think JBG-43 was at Oldenburg?
