Bought Albatross Prints

Post by eLaReF » Mon Aug 12, 2024 6:12 pm

In the 60's & early 70's, it was a 'thing' to buy prints (And copy slides) from a whole host of sources. I didn't keep details of who I bought them from, so cannot state who the copyright owner is. They therefore just have 'eLaReF Collection'
I've been retired 12 years now & still haven't finished my retirement project of getting them all digitised.
This most recent batch was of Grumman's 'Goat' i.e. Albatross

Thanks for sharing these with us, great shots of an iconic type. Never saw any in service though, seen several preserved in the US, also a couple in Italy. I think the gateguard at Ciampino Airport was one of them. I used to work with someone, who was born in 1944 and brought up in Broadstairs (Kent). He told me that when the USAF were based at Manston with F-86s, they also had some HU-16s based and saw them regularly (lucky so and so).

Yes, very nice. I saw Italians, Spanish and Greeks in service but none of the US machines.

There were never any Albatross based at Mildenhall

137910 was based at Oslo with the US Navy Air Attaché & used to visit Northolt & Mildenhall
on odd occasions in the mid/late 60's

I stuck with B&W long after colour had become reasonably priced and I must admit, photos from that era look better to me in B&W

They were based at Prestwick but had been replaced by HC-54s when I started visiting
In fact, the three USAF 'Rescue' pix are possibly from there

Norwegian ones used to appear at events in Scotland.....................

This was 1968 at RAF Turnhouse

Fantastic pictures. Saw a couple of Norwegian examples at Prestwick in 1967.

Is that an RAF Argosy in the background of picture 2?

Great stuff!

First one has the feel of Prestwick, and possibly the second USAF Rescue one but not so much the third.

from the background I think the 3 Norwegian pictures may have been taken at RAF Ballykelly
in the 1960's

Since Albats seem to be of some interest, this was just the first day of our trip, at Tucson in 1974, so my pix, not bought
I usually wait until I don't have anyone in pics, but there were too many of us & too many planes to get around

And round the other side.............

Image97142 F4U-4 Corsair c/n 9296 by eLaReF, on Flickr

There were 8 Corsairs there

There were more in a nearby scrapyard, but that was a different day.
