Some USN visitors. All the pics with snow in them from Feb1978, are aircraft that were diverted in from the Nimitz due to bad weather, when it was taking part in an exercise in the Atlantic. Now I've got it in my mind that this was the same exercise that a Tomcat was washed overboard, but I can't find any reference to it on Google except for one in 1976. My memory of these diversions was of my mate who worked in VASS coming to the accommodation block early on a Sunday evening to get me to lend a hand seeing some diversions from the Nimitz in. Not being an aircraft trade or trained in marshaling aircraft I was right up for it, I just acted as a guide to make sure wingtips were clear of other aircraft as they parked up. Among the aircraft that showed up were 4 Phantom's and 4 A7's, all in drab grey schemes and a smattering of Intruders. This all happened between 7 and 9 PM on a miserable, rainy Sunday night. Next morning it was into the mess for breakfast and straight out to the pan around 7.30, camera in hand and the Phantom's and A7's were gone. God knows when they left, but you'd think I would have at least heard the 4 Phantom's leaving the base, no matter what the hour. I would have loved to have got photos of them.
