Following the visit to the museum we had a tour of the old operational side of the base. Don giving a running commentary and pointing out items of interest throughout the tour.

Onto the old SAC ramp with a view of the TAB-Vs and the tower in the distance

Across Runway 09 threshold – remembering the time of the F-111s going into afterburner from here

The ECP (Entry Control Point) on the other side of the runway

The 20CRS Engine Test Cell – shot of the cooling ring. Once the engine was removed from the plane it was anchoured and fired into full burner. A good picture of this can be seen in the Upper Heyford ‘Superbase’ book by Jon Davidson, page 81

The ‘Hush House’ across the way from the engine test bed building. Engines were tested in here without being removed from the plane.

Great pick -a good trip down memory lane-lets hope some of it can be preserved from development.

I see they have removed all of the thousands of new cars that were based there about 15 years ago, I worked for RoKold a local haulage firm which had one of the old units as a cold store, brings back many memories :thumb:
