Oshkosh 2022

Post by shaggy101 » Tue Aug 02, 2022 10:03 pm

First time going out for EAA Airventure Oshkosh held at Wittman Regional Airport & this event did not disappoint in anyway. more than 10,000 aircraft in display means that at certain times it is the busiest airport on the planet. & with 1 pilot telling me that they were in a stack 100 miles long with aircraft spaced at 1/2 a mile it's not hard to imagine the scale of this event. I will admit that the vast majority of the 10,000+ aircraft were GA types which for me aren't particularly interesting. The only real gripe I have was the lack of USAF assets especially in the flying display, they were completely outshone by the US Navy & Marine Corps who were nothing short of spectacular.

Here are my efforts from the first day which wasn't a show day as such, more an arrivals day. Most of the mil stuff was later on in the week so that is to come:

Nice. Oshkosh is really a 'must do' for every enthusiast. I was lucky enough to go six times between 1998 and 2011. Don't do photography, so spent the morning watching arrivals on 027 and then opposite Cloud 9 for the display. As you say, too much GA and aerobatic types in the display. I watched a lot on U tube this year, and it certainly lacked the Military participation of past years. Loved going there, but in the end it got a bit 'samey' and was just another show [albeit for 8 days at a time] that was a long way away. It was interesting with the arrivals watching those who could fly well, and those who couldn't!. Rather a lot of the latter!!. A lot of people do not practise their 180 degree turn to finals, which is non- standard, and it showed!!. Incidentally, the first day of my first time there, the temperature was 105 degrees. A record that has yet to be broken!!. :) Took a ride in the Tri-Motor.

Thanks for sharing these, I've never been to Oshkosh myself, but have been told by those that have it's a bit frantic to say the least. If you're interested in all aspects of aviation, you're in heaven. But there's some great shots here.

JPicker. Take very comfortable walking shoes and hire or buy a collapsible over-the-shoulder chair. First time there is as if you had died and gone to heaven. Much to see!!.

Here are my efforts from day 2, still plenty of arrivals today & A couple of surprises as well, the CF-5D springs immediately to mind. More military arrivals today with 2 USAF T-38's being the highlight for me, there was also a third that came in from Beale AFB as well but I was on my way back so missed that one.

'Naked Fanny' [which has a different meaning in the States!'] Has been around for years!. It was owned by the head of the Warbirds organisation, and was making a low pass, or so we thought initially which got lower, and lower, ...and lower, when we realised he had actually forgotten to lower the gear!!. At 20 feet there was an anguished cry from the Tower ''Skyraider Gear. Skyraider gear!!'' At which point he JUST managed to overshoot before the prop contacted the ground!!. He won't do that again!! And in front of an Airshow crowd too!!.  Probably 2007.

Day 4 of the show, not that many interesting arrivals as to be expected but there certainly was one nice one in the shape of an immaculate F-86 Sabre. The U-2 display was a joy to behold as was the flight of the cats & the USN legacy flight complete with a pairs E/A-18G display as well.
