Jubilee Flypast 02.06.22

Post by Damien » Thu Jun 02, 2022 2:04 pm

Afternoon All,

Fortunately the flypast ran in over south Suffolk/ north Essex so nice and local to me. The below were taken from Flatford, between Ipswich and Colchester and location of John Constable's famous painting, "The Haywain". In the order taken;

Hope they are of interest.

Good stuff

You were in the right place for the 70

The coronation was 2 June 1953 so should be a 69?

George VI died in February 1952 at which point she became Queen.

No correct answer here  ....so do it again next year with enough Hawk T2's to make a 'Crown' (Damn! they were an insignificant waste of airspace.) The rest of the flypast was a brilliant exhibition of piloting skills & co-ordination. :thumb:

The Hawks where representing the type the squadrons and their task of training pilots to fly the "significant" types of aircraft therefore not "insignificant"...in my humble opinion...

Quite right - every aircraft has a purpose and represents its place in the services.

Fair point I guess, but something didn't look right about a tiny 'diamond four' Hawk T2 formation as the flypast built to the climax (possibly exacerbated by a slightly larger gap to the Typhoon 70?) After all the huffing & puffing about practices out of Valley perhaps my personal expectations of that element were unrealistically high? Being flown by Instructor calibre pilots I had imagined more Hawks in a potentially special formation might have been on offer, at least a minimum 'Vee 7' to keep the width of the formation. Oh well!
Wasn't the final number of aircraft included in the Flypast 72?.... Should've been 75 for Hawks sake! :thumb:

70 aircraft took part in the flypast, for obvious reasons!

From memory I think the Hawks did something very special for the Windsor castle Flypast - did they do the E-R ? Perhaps a mix of Leeming and Valley Hawks nonetheless they have played their part over the years

either way they are an essential element in the training of modern day pilots and crews they don't have to justify their existence as they are an essential element of the Royal air force....

I agree with Supra, it looks like something was planned, worked up but didn't reach the standard needed so they binned it. I suspect it was a crown formation which would be more difficult to fly than the 70 formation performed by the Typhoons. Shame really because the rest of the flypast hit the mark. Must be gutting for the Hawk pilots who put the effort in to be there on the day.

Thank-you Verelli. From yours & XA310 posting on page 1 of viewtopic.php?f=287&t=218556 we were clearly expecting something more with the projected forward locating of multiple T2's to Brize? Your recollection of past Hawk formations seems okay to me. I went to Yeovilton for the 'E II R' forward deployment of Valley element of Hawk T1's, which made for a really busy time. :)

Hi
The Hawks were never operating out of Brize but were landing after the flypast for fuel.

Hi Mike, just wanted to say how impressed I am with your factually accurate posts regarding everything, including Huw Edwards!
However, you’re probably aware that “assumption is the Mother of all F**k Ups” & this time it’s bitten your butt! Yes it was the 70th Jubilee BUT they did fly 72 aircraft in the Flypast.
Below is the list & also a link to ‘lynothehammer’s photo-post of the flypast ‘as it happened’.

Seacat 1-3……………………………… Formation 1 = 3
Vanguard 1-4..…………………………Formation 2 = 4
Commando 1-4………………………..Formation 3 = 4
Vortex 1-6……………………………..…Formation 4 = 6
Memorial 1-5…………………………..Formation 5 = 5
Camel 1-5..…………………………..…Formation 6 = 5
Omen 1-3……………………………….…Formation 7 = 3
Grizzly 1-2..……………………………..Formation 8 = 2
Stingray 1-2………………………..……Formation 9 = 2
Triplex 1-2/Tartan/ Bolt 11-12..Formation 10 = 5
Madras/Doom 11-14…….………..…Formation 11 = 5
Bacardi??1-4…………................Formation 12 = 4
Warlord 1-8/Cobra 1-7…… ’70’ Formation 13= 15
Red Arrow 1-9…………………………..Formation 14 = 9
Total = 72
Confirmation here....viewtopic.php?f=16&t=220530
Sooo! a couple more Hawk T2's, Junos, Jupiters (valued Trainers too?) Shadows, Navy Avengers & the Dak' really wouldn't have hurt the seemingly irrelevant content of 70 aircraft. :pop:
