New (to me) camera and lens - extreme dirt

Post by planehazza » Sun Jul 21, 2024 8:47 pm

Not a good start. Got home to review the photos I took and there is a SERIOUS amount of dirt on the mirror, sensor, or lens.

These are terrible photos, but the light background shows how bad the dirt is. There isn't a single bird or bug in these pictures. So much for a "like new" lens and an "excellent" body. I know they'll be checked when they enter the warehouse, and purchased items won't be tested together, but sorry, this isn't as described...

I've emailed MPB for advice. Do I even attampt to clean it myself, or just have them take it back? The very first photos I took at home after taking it out of the box have the marks, but can't be seen clearly because I was using a 70-300mm to take photos of flowers 6' away ha

Sorry if the above sounds harsh. I'm new to DSLR photography and I was rather tired last night ha. I've ordered a rocket duster and will have a go at cleaning the body when it arrives.

That's on the sensor, it needs cleaning. A rocket duster will make it worse.

Ah I see. It'll be a general useful tool for getting particles off the lens and out of the body. I've emailed the supplier, so I'll either be asking for a refund or for them to pay for a professional clean, as this kind of dirt is not akin to "excellent". The exteriour is brown and covered in gunk from skin oils etc. It's more like average or poor tbh. I'm still within the 14 day return period and it has 6 month warranty too.

Ony ever purchased once from MPB but sold several times to them. Purchase was ok but Wex in my opinion have a better and consistent grading system. Plus their prices always seem to be better. MPB however offer more when selling. I would certainly be unhappy with a dirty camera especially a dirty sensor. Hope you get it sorted.

DPD picking camera up tomorrow for a full refund, assuming the techs deem my description to be valid. I mean 2 or three specs on the sensor would be cause enough for a refund, but that's just obscene. Fingers crossed.

That is a shame! Hope you still managed to get a couple of nice shots.

Quite within your rights to fire it back at them IMHO. Good luck for finding another , and hope its trouble free.
