Canon 5d Mkll
Hi all.
In the New Year I am going to set my sights on a used full frame camera and currently focusing on the Can 5d Mkll. There are plenty on ebay and in stock at MPB. I would just like to know your views either negative or positive please. From the research I have done ,it seems to tick all the boxes.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Canon 5d Mkll
I've got a MkII and a MkIV. I still use the MKII for gigs and portraits, great camera, robust and weather proof, just try to keep the ISO down to 1600 or 1250, 2000 the noise starts becoming problematic but maybe with good daylight it might be less of a problem as the noise really starts in the blacks. Paired with good glass they are now very good value for money.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
Re: Canon 5d Mkll
Hi,
I use two MkII's, love them, I use a battery grip with each which seems to balance them out with 100-400 and 70-200 lenses attached, I don't think I'll be changing for a very long time.
Image quality is superb, when the photographer gets it right
Both came from MPB, great deals..
Go for it..
Have a great Christmas and 2022..
Cheers

Re: Canon 5d Mkll
Full frame camera - if you use it for aviation photography you will either buy a longer lens or permanently have a teleconverter attached.
In the aviation photography game, unless you can get really close a crop sensor is king in my opinion

Having switched from Canon 700D to Canon 6D Mk1 I get better results even when cropping to match image size.
John, you probably know already but your 55-250 will not fit a full-frame camera mount.

Re: Canon 5d Mkll
The impact of the change in sensor size on your aviation photographs will depend on what you photograph. I found that jumping from a 1.3x crop to a full-frame camera was only a problem when I tried photographing small aircraft that were a long way from me - and even my Canon L series lenses struggle to make sense of something you can only just see so I avoid that type of photography. The big advantage of full-frame I find is getting that crop magnifier back. I.e. my 17-40 lens is 17-40 rather than 22-52, which makes a big difference when photographing large aircraft.
Re: Canon 5d Mkll
hi John, do you mind if I just do a small bit on my experience's when I was taking slides I purchased a Canon - 35/350 lens but when unable to buy anymore went to the digital era purchasing a Canon EOS30D with the intentions of
combining it with foresaid lens, this just did not work out, a mate put me onto the 5D Mk.1 which was way back in 2006 and after a while backed this up with a 100/400 lens
in 2016 decided to move on & upgrade to a 5D Mk.III with the 100/400 Mk.II lens & a teleconvertor, but this did not work out well because it kept locking up in certain shots, found that this was very phrustrating so decided to try a 7D Mk.II
Bad Move!! could not get on at all with this set up so it was back to a 5D Mk.III this time with a Sigma 150/600 but a negative factor there was the fact if you were taking C5's etc not always getting the angle you perhaps wanted
But then Sigma brought out that 60/600 which was a big change to my personal outlook on what I could take - obviously the biggest negative on these 2 Sigma Lenses is the size/weight factor
anyway after all that waffling the 5D Mk.III is also worth looking into also, but thats just my personal take

Re: Canon 5d Mkll
I used a Canon 5 when a mate gave me an opportunity, after I had been using a Canon 40D for a long time.
At that point, I fell for FF (maybe away from avaiation - although it did extremely well), and more towards social and event photography. I then purchased a 5D2 which was an absolute beauty, again for combined social and avaiation images. I had a number of years ownership of the 5D3 and latterly the 5D4. This growth in the Canon 5 series FF has been complimented with L Series glass and the quality recorded has been sublime.
In sum, I have no hesitation in advocating the 5 series camera body, it is hugely effective in sensor ability. Just remember, suit the body (FF or Crop) to the style of image you like to take

Thanks

Some people swear by the extenders but I've tried the latest on mine and was shocking compared to just cropping in.robw210 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 9:46 pmSlightly off topic , but I bought a 5d mkiv in 2020 , coupled with a 100-400 mk2 lense , and I'm very happy with it ....But for extra reach , what would everyone's advice be , a Canon teleconverter or one of these Sigma 60/600 lenses ...Sorry to hi jack your thread

If you pixel peep or are a stickler for quality avoid the extenders or sigmas at all costs.
Only way forward from 100-400ii is the big whites in reality (500/600/800mm) if you still want the quality to remain, then you are compromising portability/expense and looking like a mad person with an rpg on the verge

Re: Canon 5d Mkll
Do you speak from experience of using any recent Sigmas?
The Sigma 150-600 is a good lens, widely used and a minimum of one third of the price - new Sigma vs (well-) used Canon.
As with all of these type of posts, nothing replaces doing your own research and trying hands-on in a store.
Re: Canon 5d Mkll
I haven't owned one if that's what you mean, I know people that have and solid light is needed to get anything crispy.Nighthawke wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 11:59 pmDo you speak from experience of using any recent Sigmas?

Also nearing the tele end they tend to get a bit soft, which completely defeats the purpose of them.
Not knocking the lens in the slightest but the question was asked coming from a 100-400ii which is tack sharp so anything but the bigger whites will suffice.
Maybe slightly harsh generally tarring all sigmas because that isn't completely true, I used to own a couple of sigma wides that I loved.
Stand by the extenders comment completely, impossible to get a better shot with an extender as opposed to cropping, maybe on a non zoom prime they are worthwhile.
Indeed re doing your own research, everyone has an opinion, mine is buy OEM lenses or forever wish you did.

Re: Canon 5d Mkll
My current use 'grab gear' is the Canon 5Div, coupled with a 100-400 Mk2 L and I have absolutely no hesitation in using the Canon x1.4 extender. I see absolutely no discernible drop in image quality (upto 600mm x 400mm for exhibition). Just be aware the use of this extender will cost one full stop of light.
