Nikon 200-500 and D810 - a good combination?

Hello all. I switched to full-frame cameras in 2016 and have been using a couple of Nikon D610s, which I am more than happy with. However, I am thinking of adding a D810 to my arsenal, for use with my Nikon 200-500mm lens.

I know a D500 DX body and 200-500 lens combination is popular with sports and wildlife photographers, and no doubt aircraft photographers too, but I want to stick with full-frame, and was thinking a D810, with its 36mp sensor, would offer effective extra reach with scope for cropping if need be.

I am led to believe the D500 has superior autofocus to the D810, but I reckon the latter is no slouch either.

Does anyone use a D810 with a 200-500 lens? I'd be interested to hear your comments, good or bad!

Thanks.

Hi,
Yes, I use a Nikon D810 amongst others and use a variety of lenses with it, including 100mm up to 600mm. I have found the D810 to be a good camera and image quality is superb. I regularly use for wildlife, motorsport and aviation photography.
Cheers

Thanks for that. My brother-in-law has a D810 and is very pleased with it. Unfortunately we live a few hundred miles apart, so not so easy to check it out with my lens. MPB have a couple of relatively low shutter count examples for under £900, so a camera body, battery grip and second battery could be bought for just under £1,000. Seems like a bargain! However, I might just hold out for a really low shutter count example. One will come along soon enough.

I use a D500 and agree they are a very good match. I don't know anyone with a D810 so can't help you there. Perhaps have a nose around Ffordes for a body, easier to get to being relatively local.

Thanks for that, Mike. My preferred vendors are Ffordes, MPB and Wex, and I shall be keeping an eye on these sites in case a good, really low-mileage example appears. I was hoping the profusion of mirrorless cameras would have boosted the secondhand DSLR market, but alas not with what I'm looking for at the moment!

LCE are also good. I have used all of the ones you mentioned at some stage.

Thanks Mike. Funnily enough LCE popped into my head this morning. I'm sure I bought from them sometime back in my days of using film. I'll check them out again. I missed two really low-count D810s on Park Cameras' site yesterday afternoon. Rather annoyingly, they are both still listed a day later!

Oh that's frustrating. I saw one on a Nikon only Facebook forum, not sure if you do FB.

I guess the D810 is like my D800 and if you wish it can do automatic DX cropping at 1.3x or 1.5x, with the advantage of reducing the storage requirement.

I think the two are pretty much the same. The D810 with DX cropping gives, I believe, 16mp images. My D610s give images of 10mp in DX mode but I don't use it. I prefer to shoot full-frame and crop as necessary in image-editing software.
