Nikon 200-500mm

Post by macbear26 » Sun Feb 20, 2022 11:53 am

Hi members,
I am thinking about buying the Nikon 200-500mm Nikon lens, did hear a few rumours that it goes a bit soft at 500mm. Can any members that own one give me there thoughts on this lens please.
thanks macbear 26

I had the sigma 150 to 600 on a Nikon d500 before I bought the Nikon 200-500. I would not go back to the Sigma. I found the Nikon Vr and clarity of the shots better from the Nikon. I will say though I do miss the push pull ease of the sigma lens, although it is still possible to push pull the Nikon lens. Auto focus is a little slow when shooting very fast moving objects but Nikon have made it this way because of the good price point, and like any telephoto it can and does hunt sometimes in low light situations. I do like the 5.6 aperture throughout the range though. Ive added my flick link as most of my photos are shot with d500 and Nikon 200-500. I do most of the time include my metadata so you can look through and see my shots at different focal lengths. I would also say that shooting with any telephoto at maximum range is not going to be the sharpest image unless you step down a little if you have the light to do so. Im not the best photographer out there but its given me some nice shots and I photograph mainly birds and aircraft. The shot I have attached was a passing apache helicopter. I was stood up the hill using a monopod due to the wind and shooting at 1/100th. given the price of the nikon lens I dont think its that bad a shot. Flickr is good as you can search specific lenses or cameras used for shots an look at different people shots to get an idea how sharp a lens can be. All of my shots are edited in lightroom and most will be cropped to some extent.

Hi Richard.
Thanks for the info and looking on your Flickr site, they are very acceptable. As you say its a very good lens for the price. Possibly going out to the West coast (States) in early May for some photography.

I've had my 200-500 for nearly 2 years now and I love it , I don't personally see any fall off in sharpness at the top end unless my shutter speed is silly low but that's probably just blur! Once you get used to carrying it around and find your preferred settings you can't go wrong for the price.
