Night shoots

Post by cat1 » Tue Jan 31, 2023 6:03 pm

Hello there,
Down in the sleepy south west we're occasionally treated to the odd A400/C130, but mostly in the evening, when there is very low light.
Any suggestions on settings for shots in this evening situation?
If it makes much difference I use a Canon EOS 450D.

You'll need a relatively high ISO depending on the light available, certainly 400 and prob 800 at least, keep the aperture of the lens wide open so F2.8 if you have it, or 3.5 / 4.5, use shutter speed priority which'll keep the shutter speed as high as poss, ands last but not least, good technique.

Ok, thanks very much for the advice

Shutter priority won't keep the shutter speed as high as possible.
It will set the aperture relevant to the shutter speed set by you.
Both aircraft types being photographed here are props so my suggestion would be set the camera to shutter priority and set it for something between 1/100 and 1/320 depending on how steady your hands are and how proficient your technique is.
Then set the camera to auto ISO.
That's assuming you wish to photograph them in flight of course.

Having had a 400D (slightly older than the 450D) and a later 700D, both suffered from noise with high ISO (above 800 ISO). Therefore don't be surprised if you push higher and get grainy/noisy results.
