I need to replace lost the hood from my camera lens, it's a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5/5.6L II USM . The model I need is the ET-83D, however to purchase a genuine Canon hood is expensive , looking at £55 - 65. There are plenty of generic ET-83D hoods on the market that are much more affordable, but often can be of questionable quality (usually made from flimsy thinner plastic). I have recently seen a genuine (used) Canon ET-83C on ebay, which is in good nick. This model of hood came with the earlier version of my lens, insomuch that it doesn't incorporate the sliding filter door that's on the 83D model (which I'm not too bothered about). Before I take a chance with it, does anyone know if this older hood is compatible with the newer lens? Will it fit?

I've no personal experience but according to this discussion the ET-83C fits on the mark II lens...

Interesting discussion there, the concensus being that the hood is possibly designed to be sacrificial - similar to crumple zones on cars.
I'll chance my arm with the 83C then (even though it is 3mm longer than the 'D', there's no vignetting effect).

83C hood arrived today, and I can confirm that it does indeed fit the mk.II lens, there is no vignetting effect despite being 3mm longer than the 83D either.

Following this thread and having just replaced my (pattern-part) EF-S 17/55 hood for a genuine Canon (£30 - Amazon), I can say I'm glad I spent the extra money. Fuzzy inside so no glare and it clips firmly on and off. No more discovering it's slipped after the event and spoilt my pics.
