MOD Stafford

Post by reds1966 » Thu May 30, 2019 11:38 am

Does anyone want to see a regular MOD Stafford (or Beacon Barracks) thread?

It is regularly used by military helicopter for refuelling (there has been a Merlin and Wildcat in there this morning). Traffic climbing out of there often stays low level and doesn't always pop up on 360Radar until much further on its journey or not at all.

They apparently use 278.175 although I am too far away myself to hear the 2-way.

Thoughts?

I'm always happy to see anything local.

I'm semi-regularly (read training courses a few times a year) next door to MOD Stafford, often hear helicopters heading in, never quite see them.

Up in the wild norths of Stoke I never seem to pick any RT up from Stafford.

Visiting today (Sunday 8th) was Navy Wildcat ZZ519 which dropped in for fuel on its way from RAF Woodvale back to RNAS Yeovilton after participating in the Southport Airshow. Touchdown 16.35 and lift off 16.45, both local. On departure it called as Blackcat 1 on 278.175 and then routed round RAF Cosford heading south where it was visual as a single Wildcat.

VALIANT 62 a Wildcat from Yeovilton is currently working Birmingham Radar and calling into Stafford for fuel. Just to the East of Cosford 20.02, confirmed as a singleton and reported on 360Radar as ZZ392. Two SAS Dauphin's were also in earlier but can't help with the serials.

Wildcat CARBON 10 just lifted Venning Barracks, Telford 13.30 routing into Stafford for fuel and will be on the ground at 13.40 for 2 hours. 360Radar ties it back to ZZ408 but callsign confirmed as CARBON as he was calling Shawbury 369.175.

To add to this Puma XW199 also called in at 14.56 as Vortex 242 for fuel, heard calling Stafford Ops 3 minutes out
