Any more Armed Forces Day Movements?

Post by Unknown74 » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:14 am

I saw the Red Arrows Last Night (well from a distance really) and I believe I'm due to see them again Today along with (hopefully) a Sea King and The BBMF over Edinburgh but are there any other Armed Forces Day Movements due at Edinburgh, thought I heard an ASCOT callsign just before the Reds Display but it was departing the other way..........

Oh and I also believe there's a Flypast This Evening around 6.30 with 3 Tornados and 3 Typhoons to round things off.

Today I have so far seen, RED ARROWS, BBMF Lancaster & 2 Spitfires (I believe they were 2 Spits) and 4 Tornado GR.4s - Callsign BATON, any serial IDs tie ups would be appreciated........

The Ascot callsign may have been for Prince Charles, as I believe he is in attendance at todays proceedings.

BBMF also recovered back to Edinburgh after their flypast. Last chatter on the scanner regarding them was something about Spitfire heading to a hangar.

Turbo One One was the only Typhoon in the Flypast unfortunately, any idea why? Operational, Weather or some other tech reason. Slight disappointment but good to see a Typhoon - shame it wasn't 3. Also was it not meant to be 3 Typhoons and 3 Tornados (why send the 4 earlier)........

Put the question mark beside 3 because chatter on the scanner said 3 were due to fly through the zone, but I only heard the one.

The brief comms I heard on my scanner on 255.4 Leuchars departure sounded very like it was just a single ship!! But may be wrong?

The answer to the Tornado query is here :- viewtopic.php?f=74&t=36362" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The answer to the Lancaster, Spitfires and some of the Red Arrows is here :- viewtopic.php?f=16&t=36379" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I suggest you click on "View new posts" (like I do all the time) and then you wouldn't have had to ask !

Unfortunately never got down to Holyrood Park but did get myself to a very good vantage point overlooking the City Centre and got great views of the Red Arrows (who I had seen on Friday Night), BBMF and the Typhoon. Saw the 4 Tornado GR.4s from my bedroom window as they flew right over! A couple of other questions, did the SAR Helicopter turn up for the Parade Flypast and did the Navy Lynx appear in the Park? They only showed the "Chinook" and the "Typhoon" on TV. There seemed to be some unusual changes to the programme.

Hi Unknown74 regarding your typhoon puzzle, i can confirm that the 3ship departed leuchars around 5.40 on sat evening in a formation take off! But they all returned as 3 singles between 6.30 and 6.40. So its a bit weird they didn't do the 3 ship flypast!

Cheers balamorybuzzed, the reason I was puzzled was that it was in the leaflet that it was a flypast by 3 Typhoons and 3 Tornados at 6.30 so that was my reason for being puzzled.

The cloudbase was too low for a formation fly-past by the Typhoons, that's why 2 of them returned to Leuchars.

Not surprised by that cheers Flaps, that's also the reason why the 4 GR.4s altered their route from going South West and instead headed North.

I was sitting at the beach in Musselburgh with the scanner to see the 3 Typhoons. Can confirm the 3 ship asked EDI approach permission to enter the zone to circuit 5 miles out to check the weather. All three did so and turned opposite Musselburgh with 2 of the aircraft then routing direct back to Leuchars leaving the remaining one to circuit back to near North Berwick before turning again for the run in. A wee bit disappointing but the weather over the City at that point was pretty attrocious.
