Tracker accuracy

Post by Condor68 » Wed Oct 06, 2021 9:23 am

Just wondered what sort of accuracy trackers have.According to ADSB just had a small aircraft passed over here approx 100yds along road from house at 20000ft .Bright clear skies yet didnt hear or see a thing, travelling at 340knts would have thought it would be a bit noisy?.

It might be an idea to refine the question as it is a wide subject, military or civilian etc.

😉 the one over you could be the stealth glider that often flies over here.

There's no "go-round" in a glider.

Earlier this year I was on ADS-B and saw an aircraft icon which showed take-off from Stansted and continue at around 10000ft in a NW direction until it was just South of Peterborough. It then turned South and started climbing and diving in a most unbelievable manner.Just North of Stevenage it descended very quickly to minus 100feet and then started climbing again. Obviously inaccurate and I am still not sure if there was an aircraft there at all or if it was a complete technical glitch.

Just did a playback on FR24 and noted a Hawk that passed NW bound towards Lossie about that time. Accuracy tends to be quite good, but where you think they are may be a bit further away than you expect.

ADSB will be pretty accurate. But if it is being MLAT'd then position accuracy is down to the number of ground stations tracking it (and how accurately they are setup) to allow the MLAT maths to work

ADS-B can be dreadfully inaccurate in NE Scotland, it looks like some sharers have used incorrect co-ordinates when setting up their feeds.

do you mean ADSB exchanges plotting? ADS-B itself doesn't rely on the sharers location as the aircraft location data is in the message. However, if they are MLATing an aircraft which isn't using ADS-B then absolutely the setup of the feeds in crucial otherwise the math to plot the aircraft location is off...

It was the Pirate Hawk I meant Arab (had this on another thread and didnt want to mention Military)Tracked it up the East coast as it Passed Leuchars and thought I had nothing else to do but step outside.Clear blue skies no real background noise no Hawk.Usually hear them quite far off.Must admit have seen quite a few aircraft appear to stop then the on ground message appear or just disappear over the Cairngorms. Will have to assume its the base for the aforementioned Stealth gliders
