Sea Fury Incident

Just seen on the British Airshow Review Facebook page that the Navy Wings Sea Fury has crashed this afternoon.

No other info, but both crew are reported ok.

Sea Fury T.20
Navy Wings’ Sea Fury T.20 made a precautionary forced landing in a field next to RNAS Yeovilton following a problem with the engine on a routine training flight this afternoon. Both pilots are safe and well and have been taken to Yeovil district Hospital for a precautionary check-up. The cause is under investigation and both the CAA and Air Accident Investigation Branch have been informed. No further information is available at this time.

The above site has posted some rather sad pictures this afternoon of a very sick Sea fury after a forced landing this afternoon in a field near the airfield.

Don't have much luck with Sea Fury's - it was only August last year that one crashed wasn't it? The original text release made me think it wasn't that bad, but those photos tell a different story!

Were these the only two airworthy examples in the UK?

This is the same machine as made a crash landing at Culdrose show on 31 July 2014. Royal Navy have not had much luck with operating heritage Sea Furies.

Looking on Freedar earlier this afternoon, before I knew what had happened, a HeliOps Sea King was orbiting in the area of Limington (the village where the Sea Fury came down).

When the St Athan HMCG SAR helo took off to head to Yeovilton, HeliOps left the area and headed back towards Portland.

Wonder if they were tasked to attend initially?

Hate to say it, but, when looking at these superb picture last week, I noted that it had a Centaurus engine, and I thought to myself 'I wonder how long this one will last' : There is a bit of a history about these. I know I am jumping the gun,but apparently it was doing circuits, and it would appear that it had an engine problem. This engine relied on a very special oil that only Shell produced, and it ran out about 15 years ago. Guess the alternative isn't so good. Sea Fury crash landing last year involved a P and W engine tho'. Glad crew are O.K.

You missed-out the very low mileage. Normal wear & tear marks. Some trolley dings. Needs new windscreen. One careful owner from new....& then the RAF/RN!

All you need is the data plate to give provenance. A lot of Warbirds and vintage civvies are like triggers broom. Airframe Assemblies on the Isle of Wight could build you a Spitfire airframe from scratch but without an original manufacturers data plate you couldn't register it. Not the first time this Sea Fury has been written off.

When VR230 was under rebuild at Brough 1994-97, VX281 was alongside as a "pattern" airframe. It had a significant crease in the lower longeron behind a wing pick-up and we all sucked through our teeth and said that won't fly again - how wrong we were !
