The longest running maintenance contract will come to an end by 2013, when the contract for the upkeep of the VC10 fleet comes to an end.

I think it should read 'Major' with a capital M - as in a Major Maintenance (formerly Major Servicing) activity, or a Primary, or a Minor. We haven't done 'Majors' on F3s for years but they're still (just about) flying. It doesn't mean you can't do major work (as in deep, complex repairs etc) on the aircraft.
