C-17 unofficial name - "Moose"

Post by GOOSE » Sat Dec 19, 2009 1:01 pm

Starting to see the C-17 being called "Moose" on some e groups.

I've never heard this before, is it a new thing? An unofficial thing? Or just someones pet name?

Grateful for any help. :thumb:

It's to do with the sound it makes when being refuelled on the ground. They say it sounds like a moose

Gary is quite right - I first heard the name "Moose" used on a Discovery Channel documentary around five or six years ago. The noise which resembles the bellowing of a Bull Moose is made by air venting from fuel tanks during the re-fueling process.

All C-17s on Ops in the Middle east use "Moose" as their callsign too....

Well, you live and learn.

Thanks to all who replied.

Don't see many up here - I'll have to invest in PP multilat and maybe score the OTT FINDO ones. :thumb:
