New Milscanners

I have for a long time used Milscanners as a reference for frequencies. I do not like what they have done in respect of making it a forum based site , with access gained to the database frequency site ONLY if you join the forum. This is done by reporting aircraft movements and frequencies on a regular basis.

They claim that this will help them with the upkeep of the database site. If you do not give information over a month you have access NO to the database, you are taken off the forum and banned from the database. Yes I know they put a lot of work into the up keep, but find it unfair that people should be forced into been banned from the site. How many members are just going to fall by the way side, just because of not supplying info in regularly.

I would prefer a regular subscription to keep the database running, of a nominal fee. If new frequencies come to light they would be reported, by genuine airband listeners for free to update.

I found out about this by chance because I forgot My log-in details, and requested a new log-in...

Had exactly the same problem.

Tried to log in for my yearly check of frequencies -- No Joy.
Have always had high regard for this site until recently.
I do not monitor my scanner routinely .just use it if I visit a show or airbase, and like to check the current frequencies.
Like you,would be quite happy to pay a nominal fee as a `non contributing user`.

I had the same issue only use my scanner when I go to Mildenhall or Coningsby etc wanted to check my freqs upto date can’t log in emailed Andy at milscanners told me I need to be active each month he forgets a sent him a full list of TADs and awacs freqs when he took over milscanners.

I did use www.milscan.nl, until it shut down about four years + ago. That site was a dutch one with all frequencies on. I think now we (fighter control members) need to share information in a separate section, of what we think is new or hear. I Myself cannot sit all day listening to the scanner, missus would moan about cleaning or washing up. Also there is work in the way. As I said a while back I am willing to share info.

I think that because Airwaves book stopped print, that milscanners think that they are the only site with ALL the frequencies

Somewhere on the WWW is a site full of up to date frequencies .

As you rightly said, Reach 1,the hardest ones to get is TADs/ASACS. The rest like bases and area freq are usually fairly easy to sort out.

I was a member of milscanners until they started to bin members that didn't post enough, I then realised that easily the best place ont'interweb was here (FC) as far as military frequencies are concerned.

Which frequencies do you need? I'm sure someone will give you a perfect reply very quickly. (Chris might charge 20p for each one if he replies, though).

I joined threshold and was very disappointed. They don't have many frequencies at all and don't really have a system to add frequencies unless you email them at the moment.

Ok.
Lets start with the basics. Swanwick military along with London/Scottish control are the main must have for scanning. Next you're local base for frequencies.
Then go on air/air and local ranges, then AARA and TADs.

As we all know Swanwick military is best for mil area radar, but just don't put all of them in your scanner. Just the ones around your area. I have around 15-20 of them, for North, North East & East including ICFs.

Next is bases, I have Coningsby, Cranwell & Waddington for when I get chance to visit.
Then I have Air/Air for East of England for aircraft working the North Sea. I also have Donna Nook range included, as this is just 20 mile away .

Now I do have listed AARA & TADS, but not in the scanner, as they hit and miss with far too many to list. You may never hear them.

In short just keep your memories in your scanner low, and just to what you hear regularly. Note down any new frequencies you hear on handover, which might be a TAD/ASACs, or Air refuelling.

Just one more thing, invest in a outside or in loft antenna as the antenna with the scanner is just not good enough for picking up at distance. Mount as high and clear as you can with low loss coax cable (50ohm).

How difficult is it really to send one post to the Milscanners yahoogroup per month? Some complaining on here have managed to find the time to post on this forum so it is obviously not that hard! It doesn't have to be finding new frequencies and posting them, you could perhaps just answer someones query or post one of your own. If you have the time to come on here posting then you can manage one a month on there. All they are asking is if you want the info in their database which they have compiled and set up off their own backs and their own costs that you contribute a little of your time to give back,at no monetary cost. Hardly draconian is it.
And no I have no affiliation apart from being a one a month contributor.

It means you need to join yahoo and its just more hassle. Its ok i will just keep my frequencies to myself from now on.. Anyone know the reason as to why they made this decision? I did hear it was to do with a certain app/website making money from the frequencies they have on their site? How true that is i dont know

If that is the case then who can blame them. If you've spent a lot of time providing something for free and someone comes along, poaches that hard work and then tries to profit from it you're going to be quite miffed to say the very least. Securing that information to protect your interests and those with whom you share it, as well as stopping someone making money for little or no effort is the sensible thing to do. Hassle - yes maybe so but it depends what value you put on having access.

I Myself don't know how to set up a website or what is involved financially or time needed to put in. Yahoo is to me just another site like google or mozzilla, as a search engine which you use to search. If it takes money, as I said why not use a small subscription from members. I know some people want it ALL for free, and will refuse to pay a fee.

A point in question is two websites which are the the same in respect of what they do. ADB Exchange is a tracking site for mil aircraft and is free were as 360 Radar is a charged after 24 hours for the same thing. So you take your choice. Flight radar another such radar tracking do not charge, but have limited use, until you pay and then you get more info on the screen .

There is always ways of finding out frequencies from other radio/frequencies sites, including UK scanning forum.

To sum up, Yes I would sign up to milscanners database, for a nominal fee, Not wanting to joining the forum. Milscanners did ask for new frequencies or change to their database to be reported via a tab on the website, so is that not free info for their site??. Should I charge for info I know????.

If I can give frequencies info or help in any way it will be for free.

That a good point,BUT someone somewhere will try and make money from nothing. Its the way of the world. I would never make money from peoples hard work as its not fair. Thats why I share what I have for free. Knowing ware to look for information is the key, and its who you know.
Look at the information on this site (Fighter Control), its all free, and contributed by members who enjoy this hobby, for which we should be grateful and Thank them.
It covers from aircraft modelling to radio to photos. If I wanted to use the information, I would contact the member first out of respect, and not just steal it. I have done this once with a photo, which I used as a screen saver.

I have been looking through some emails and posts from Milscanners forum. One person (maybe part of the Admin) was bragging how one member had been got rid of, off the forum. He was named and shamed. Why post to all other members about the dismissed member?.

I joined to find out what it was all about.

I suppose if I don't post anything I will get the same treatment.

Its quite simple. If you want to be a member you contribute, how difficult can it be? I've been removed before, but didn't take it personally, just reapplied.
It seems people want something for nothing and ive seen posts like can someone send me all the frequencies in a file right for my scanner and for the area i live! REALLY. Just spend a little time and effort in the hobby and you'll improve what you can find and listen to. Getting spoon fed doesn't help you.
If you need to ask for password resets just ask. It seems like people took it personally and got a bit entitled as they want it, and want it now!
I spent a day at the park and view at fairford and had most, if not all the air to airs for the jets arriving. It just took planning and it paid off. Closecall, searching, scanning it was all good fun, and people should see it as this rather than acting like spoilt brats.
Set up your own group. Good luck, i run a blog and it takes time and effort, more effort and time than contributing one post per month.
