Lockdown at RAF Mildenhall

Post by Castic » Tue Apr 25, 2023 1:51 pm

Have heard that RAF Mildenhall was put into lockdown this afternoon following a 'live incident' It`s know an exercise was planned this week but this was apparently not connected to any exercises scheduled.
Blue 72 and Lager 852 in the hold while the incident was made safe.

Have since heard it was a 'genuine live incident' and that someone has been detained.

Lifted from the RAF Mildenhall Facebook page:
The base went into lockdown due to reports of suspected active shooter on April 25, 2023 at 1:18 p.m. The installation was conducting a base readiness exercise, and initial reports were potential exercise activity, however it was confirmed it was not exercise related and implemented a real-world lock down.

Immediately emergency personnel arrived on scene to clear the area. Authorities determined there was no active shooter.

No members were injured.

“Today we are thankful for the quick reaction of our Airmen who are highly trained and ready to respond to any situation,” said Col. Gene Jacobus, 100th Air Refueling Wing Commander. “In this case we are thankful it was determined there was no active shooter. The safety of our personnel and families is always a priority, and the base is committed to maintain a safe and secure environment.”

Many years ago, Mildenhall had a squadron of EC135's that were kept in a dedicated area close to the north side. Old spotters may recall this was where the original base (and airshow) entrance used to be.
The taxiway was marked off with a red line with ' cross this line and you get shot' (paraphrased!) painted on the ground. One day a contractor was driving along the taxiway when he got distracted by a jet taking off and strayed over the line. Cue sirens and whistles and red flashing lights. Truck loads of Security police surrounded the hapless driver and he was dragged out of the van, thrown on the concrete with an M16 pressed against various parts of his anatomy.

Very soon common sense prevailed and he was let up and sent on his way, much to the amusement of a crowd of spotters standing on the fence a hundred yards or so away. In those dim and distant days the only real 'threat' was from across the Irish Sea, and everyone suspected that they would never hit an American facility, as that was where their funds came from (allegedly).
