Wartime dummy airfields
Wartime dummy airfields
Not sure if this is the correct forum but dont see it fitting anything else.A mate of mine who grew up in the country outside Carnoustie(Sadly after beating cancer and covid got nailed by sepsis)always claimed that when he was a kid they used to play on the remains of dummy aircraft on what he said was a decoy airfield for HMS Condor and HMS Peewit inland between Arbroath and Easthaven.I went to school with him but was never involved as my bike probably wouldnt have got there. He was quite adamant about the field.I have done a lot of local nosing about and found quite a few books but even though I have found amazing bits about what was on my doorstep I cant find anything about this.Everyone in the area I have found are far to young to know. Local names are Pitcundrum or Salmondsmuir if anyone knows about this or has any pointers I would be grateful.
Thanks
Keith

Re: Wartime dummy airfields
Kellie Moor ?
Bunker for World War II N series Naval decoy site Q/QF type (a lighting decoy for an airfield and small fire decoy). Identified from RAF aerial photographs taken in June 1947, and designated AR 1 by the War Office, built to cover Arbroath airfield (NO64SW0029). The active part would have been circa 1 km to the west-southwest in an area now a forestry plantation. Now with an earth bank around, the 1947 photographs show that it was originally covered with earth.

Re: Wartime dummy airfields
Thanks for the info as you says opens up a target. The Kellie Moor is interesting as it is more easterly than I thought but the Naval link gives it possibilities.Getting difficult to find people who remember now.
Thanks again

Re: Wartime dummy airfields
Had the maps out and you have nailed it T-J.The active area would near enough walking distance from my late pals house.I was looking further north. Now to dig out more info on it and have a wander up.
