have a day off towards the end of next week and am thinking of taking my first trip to an airbase. Being on the south coast (east sussex) ther is nothing local to me

somewhere within a 2 to 3 hour drive would be good, Benson, Odiham, Mildenhall/Lakenheath . Not having done this before which are "spotter friendly"? in terms of somewher to park and watch etc. and is anyone else likely to be around?
thanks in advance for any suggestions, Gary

Living in the northeast, I'm a canny distance away from most active bases as well. I would recommend lakenheath and mildenhall, both are very spotter friendly with viewing areas and plenty of friendly folk to have some good banter with. Johns field is the best place to go for a friendly atmosphere with plenty of based aircraft to keep you occupied.

Hi Peter, thanks for reply.
lakenheath sounds appealing, not seen an F15 since early '80's at biggin hill show. Trip will probably be thursday next week, i will update here when i confirm and with any intersting stuff when i get home.
thanks again for reply, Gary

@Softbill Man No problem, would have been gutted to go all that way only to find i couldn't get to see anything.
as i said something has come up and my plans may have changed. not blessed with a decent camera, but would be nice to see some mil aircraft that aren't at 30,000 ft like the 2 C17's and E3 i've seen overhead here recently,

Dont think there is any need for such an aggressive reply.
I had some people in my shop today who said they couldnt get in due to a fire/arson attack and they attended today. I have had a few people pm me asking where i got the info from and have asked respectfully, they also have caravans there.
Maybe i wont comment in the future if i hear anything.
John
