I can't say that I'm a fan of the nickname 'Tonka' it used to be the 'Mighty Fin' and 'Flicknife' for the F3

Wasn't there a thread like this this before? Seem to remember it getting loads of replies. Or was it on the old board that got deleted?

Just done a search and couldn't find it

A couple off the top of my head:

A-7 SLUF (Short Little Ugly - er- Fellow) or something similar

F-104 Flying Coffin and Widow Maker

There must be plenty more - just can't think at the moment.

It gets my back up when people refer to Typhoon as Tiffy, what plank made that up?

Don't particularly like Tiffy either... ;)
But I do think it suits the Eurofighter Typhoon, especially when it is not carrying missiles, drop tanks etc. :D

Alot of these are not nicknames - they are either the Manufacturers names, ie given at conception (project names) or the NATO designations.

The F-111 being the Aardvark for example, or F-14 Tomcat. Nicknames are given by the general public, eg Tiffie, Tonka, even Phoon now (short for Typhoon)!

Got to ask, what is so hard about saying Typhoon? I hate Tiffie.....

At a Tiger Meet Dinner at Heyford once I heard an F-111 pilot refer to a German Tornado as a 'swing wing Alphajet'!

F-111 Switchblade
OH-6. Little Bird
S-3 Hoover
Never trust a grown man with a nickname
