5 Live were reporting a large noise sounding like a sonic boom over Devon/Cornwall this afternoon. RAF denied all knowledge. Anyone heard anymore ?

Hi,
Also one reported yesterday afternoon in the Newton Abbott area. May be my imagination but thought just heard one 20.52 over Exmouth, certainly was something, didn't sound like thunder.

I just went out the back to lock up and heard a distant rumble definitely not thunder, that was at 22.51.

I say! This is all rather exciting, isn't it. Kind of reminds me of something H.G.Wells once wrote ... the coming of the Martians!

That would be a exact description of the sound I heard. It was odd, not like the sonic boom we used to get down here from the Concorde or thunder, but a low frequency rumble, not like anything I have heard before. Best description would be like the rumble of a jet taking off in a distance, but nothing was moving at Exeter at the time and I had FR24 on and there wasn't any airways traffic around at that time.
Spooky

Not everything civilian shows on FR24 though - especially most Embraers, DHC-8s and bizjets etc.

Hi,
Indeed, I appreciate FR24 is limited. But the sound is different to what one normally expects. Certainly there was nothing working Exeter or Newquay. Unless it is being caused by odd atmospheric conditions and airliners not painting on FR24. This happened before down here and posts were put on this forum about it.
