F-4D question

Post by reaper493 » Tue Aug 24, 2021 1:29 pm

Hey chaps.

Wanting to build an LN F-4D.

Any kit recommendations?
Can it be built from the Revell FGR.2? Seem to remember it had some US engine nozzles included?

Cheers

Apart from a totally different dimensioned fuselage due to the change from the J-79 to the Spey which is relevant if you want an exact representation, at the very least you would need the appropriate shaped fin cap and the fairing under the nose of the D.
I suspect the cockpit is different, not sure about seats and I suspect various panel lines are also different. Wheels might also be different.
That said, as long as you are not the sort to take a micrometer to every thing, sort the nozzles, the radome and the fin cap and don’t show it to a phantom phanatic you should be fine. (Oh the weapon loads would be different with rounded inner pylons but external tanks the same)

Ps Revell reissued the monogram D as their own a while back I also think Eduard used the Academy kit and, if you remortgage, the Zoku-mora kit is very good. Hasegawa also did the D of course.

Academy would be way to go, there is a restock due into the UK towards the end of September too.
ZM is a good choice, if you feel the price is worth it!
Plus you might Monogram/Hasegawa options on ebay periodically, but you'd be lucky to find one cheap.

In 1/72 its a little easier. Italeri (Esci) and Hobby2000 (Hasegawa) both have kits on the market readily available. Both need work but nothing along the lines of FGR.2 to F-4D conversions!

Picked up an ERTL/AMT F-4 C/D from Ebay at a reasonable (I think) £28.

Doesn't look the best, but it'll do!

Not been able to to do any kits for near enough two months now - I am sad....
