Further Information

Based on the Gulfstream IVSP, the aircraft is one of 4 (2 Gulfstream IV's and 2 Gulfstream IVSP's) in service with the Flygvapnet. The aircraft is designated the S102B Korpen in Flygvapnet service the aircraft is used in the SIGINT role. SIGINT is intelligence-gathering by interception of signals, whether between people (COMINT) or involving electronic signals not directly used in communication (ELINT) and can be a combinations of the two. Based at Malmen in the east of the country with 73 SIGINT Squadron, the aircraft were procured in 1995 to replace the outdated TP85 Sud Aviation Caravelle which had been in service since 1971. The Aircraft was finally retiered in 1998 after the S102B gained it Full mission capability. Both aircraft fitted out for the role come under the command of Transport & Special Flights Unit who are responsible for the care and maintenance of the SIS Division aircraft. Flown with a crew of 6 (pilot, co-pilot and four system operators), the aircraft is externally characterised by sensor fairings on either side of its nose and forward fuselage, a canoe fairing below its forward fuselage and an array of hook and blade antennas installed on the lower surfaces of its wings, fuselage centre section and rear fuselage. The S 102B provides intelligence data for the Swedish government's security agency (the FRA), the SF and the Swedish Navy. When operating with the armed services, the Korpen down links data directly to combined air operations centres and navy surface combatants. The two aircraft got the individual names “Hugin” and “Munin” after the Scandiavian ancient God Oden’s two ravens, who saw everything that happened in the world.

Further Information

The aircraft is one of 73 (10 x MC130E, 20 x MC130H, 27 x MC130P, 12 x MC130W, 4 MC130J) of the MC130 Variant of the Hercules in USAF Service. MC-130 is the basic designation for a family of special mission aircraft operated by the United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and is based on the C-130 Hercules transport. The Aircrafts role is as a STOL special operations military transport aircraft. First introuduced into USAF service in 1966 the MC130 was developed to support clandestine special operations missions. The MC130H variant of the type has been in service since 1991 and was first delivered to the 8th SOS. The aircraft was developed under a program called Called Credible Sport II after a airframe left over from Credible Sport. The first Credible Sport program was for a second hostage rescue attempt in Iran was a project to develop a "Super STOL" aircraft, to be flown by Combat Talon crews, that would use a soccer stadium near the US Embassy as an improvised landing field.The project acquired three C-130H transports from an airlift unit in late August 1980, one as a test bed and two for the mission, and modified them on an accelerated basis. The program abruptly ended when one crashed during testing on October 29, 1980, and international events soon after rendered another rescue attempt moot. In 1983 MAC established a Special Operations Force Master Plan that called for 21 Combat Talon IIs and gained Initial Operational capability was reached on June 30, 1993. The type has been involved in various Operations including Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya with 4 Units (15th Special Operations Squadron based at Hurlburt Field, 1st Special Operations Squadron based at Kadena AB, 7th Special Operations Squadron, based at RAF Mildenhall and 550th Special Operations Squadron based at Kirtland AFB). The 7th SOS have been operating the MC variant since 1977 and the H since 1991 with the mission goal of deploying or extracting troops from hostile, sensitive, or otherwise undesirable locations, under any weather conditions. The type will eventually be replaced by the MC130J version when it reaches full USAF service.

The Siły Powietrzne Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej currently have 48 (38 x C and 12 x D) of the type in service in the Multirole aircraft role. The Polish Air Force have three squadrons of F-16s: two stationed (3rd Tactical Squadron and the 6th Tactical Squadron) at the 31st Tactical Air Base near Poznań and one (10th Tactical Squadron) at the 32nd Air Base near Łask and pool the aircraft between the units and bases. The F-16C/D Block 52+ was selected as as a new multirole fighter in 2002 and took the first deliveries in November 2006, continuing until 2008 under Peace Sky program. The Polish Block 52+ F-16s are equipped with the latest Pratt and Whitney F-100-229 afterburning turbofan engines, and the avionics suite includes the APG-68(V)9 terrain mapping radar system and the ALQ-211(V)4 electronic warfare suite. All Polish F-16s will be fully equipped to carry the latest in US precision ordinance, ranging from the JDAM/JSOW to the latest in export-certificate-authorized air-to-air weaponry such as the AIM-120C-5 and AIM-9X. Poland is the first member of this version of the F16 and was supplied with conformal fuel tanks and delivered 18 sets with each squadron receiving six sets. In 2010 it consisted of roughly 16,000 military personnel and about 320 aircraft, distributed among 12 bases throughout Poland. The Polish Air Force is currently operating the most advanced F16 in NATO and became the first former WarPac member to operate the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The EADS CASA C-295 is a twin-turboprop tactical military transport aircraft manufactured by Airbus Military in Spain. The Polish Air Force operates 11 of the type in service in the Tactical Transport role with 13th Airlift Squadron based at 8th Air Base at Kraków-Balice Air Base. The unit also operated the PZL M-28B Bryza in the Small Transport requirement role of which they have 17 on strength. The aircraft has Capacity for 73 troops, 48 paratroops, 27 stretchers, five 2.24 × 2.74 m (88 × 108 inches) pallets or three light vehicles. The aircraft were procured to replace Polands ageing AN26's which had been in operational service from 1972–2009. The C-295 is a further development of the commercially successful Spanish transport aircraft CASA CN-235, but with a stretched fuselage, 50% more payload capability and new PW127G turboprop engines. The C-295 made its maiden flight in 1998. 13.ELTR was redesignated from 13.PLT on 3 October 2000 with the CASA C-295s starting to arrive from 2005 with the remaining An-26 being retired in January 2008 due to the final deliveries of the CN295Ms. The C-295 is in service with the Armed Forces of 14 countries, with 85 contracted and 75 are in service.

The RAF currently have 14 (7 x KC2, 5 x KC3 + 2 fitted for KC3) of the type on order to take over the Strategic Transport and Aerial Refueling Role from the services ageing TriStars and VC10s. . Based on the civilian Airbus A330-200, the A330 MRTT has been ordered by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Royal Air Force (RAF), United Arab Emirates Air Force, and Royal Saudi Air Force. The EADS/Northrop Grumman KC-45 was a version of the A330 MRTT proposed for the United States Air Force. The UK Ministry of Defence signed a deal to lease 14 aircraft under a private finance initiative arrangement from EADS-led consortium AirTanker, with the first aircraft to enter service in 2012. There are two versions, designated Voyager KC2 and Voyager KC3 the former will be fitted with two Cobham 905E under-wing refuelling pods, the latter with a Cobham 805E Fuselage Refuelling Unit (FRU) in addition to the under-wing pods. None of the RAF aircraft will be fitted with the Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS). The fleet is to be based at RAF Brize Norton and will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines. Crewed by 2 pilots and 1 AAR operator, the aircraft will have a range of 14,800 km and a ceiling height of 41,500 ft.

The Turkish Air Force currently have 13 C130s in service consisting of a mixture of both B and E versions, all of which have been modernized by TAI under the 'Erciyes' program. This particular example comes from from 222 Filo (Alev/Flame) based at Kayseri/Erkilet, which is the home to the 12nciHUAU transport wing. The Wing is made up of 3 Squadrons (221 Filo Esen/Brise with the C160D Transall, 222 Filo Alev/Flame with the C130b/E and 223 Filo (WFU) Kanat/wing with the CN325M-100). The TuAF are due to replace some of their older C130 Airframes and augment the remaining ones with the A400M. Turkey is also a partner nation in the Airbus A400M program. Although the A400M is essentially a heavy tactical lift aircraft, it can also be transformed into a tanker aircraft for aerial refueling at short notice and has ordered a total of ten of the type. 222 have operrated the type since 1964 and currently operate all 13 of the aircraft including the Turkish Stars Support Aircraft.

The aircraft is one of 5 C130E's in service with the Siły Powietrzne Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej in the Tactical transport Role. The aircraft, based at 33 Baza Lotnicza (Powidz AB), has been in use by the unit since 2008 along with the units PZL M28B Bryza ( 7 on strength in the Utility Aircraft Role). The squadron began operations on 1 June 2007 and is tasked with transporting troops and equipment in medium and long-distance flight to take the brunt of the tasks for the Polish military contingents abroad and at home. Originally ordered by the US Air Force in 1970, Poland's aircraft were refurbished by L-3 Communications Integrated Systems in Waco, Texas. Including the installation of replacement centre wing boxes sourced from aircraft ordered between 1958 and 1961, this work will allow the fleet to remain in use for another 20 years. Further modifications included the addition of a self-protection suite including missile approach warners and radar warning receivers, plus additional armour plating and a new weather radar. The Polish expect each Aircraft to fly around 600 Hours per year and will eventually have 15 air crews totalling 75 personnel available to operate its C-130Es. The Crews have received some extensive training in the USA as part of the modernization deal. Poland is also among the 12 nations involved in the NATO-led program involving pooled fleet of three Boeing C-17 strategic transports based at Papi AB in Hungary. The extended range C-130E model first entered service in 1962 after it was developed as an interim long-range transport, after the installation of 1,360 US gal Sargent Fletcher external fuel tanks under each wing's mid-section and more powerful Allison T56-A-7A turboprops.

The Boeing C-40 Clipper is a military version of the Boeing 737-700C airline transport. It is used by both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. The 76th Airlift Squadron (76 AS) is part of the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. It operates C-20, C-21, C-37, C-40 Clipper aircraft providing executive airlfit in Europe. The C40B has been in service with the 76th AS since 2008, comeing under direct command of United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) and have been based at Ramstein since 1993. Further Information

The Westland Lynx is a British multi-purpose military helicopter designed and built by Westland Helicopters at its factory in Yeovil. The FAA currently have 39 (33 x HMA8 and 6 x AH7) Lynx in service in both the Maritime and Attack Helicopter Roles. The Lynx AH7s serve the FAA in the observation and anti-armour helicopter roles, but are mainly a light-lift helicopter mainly used by 3 Commando Brigade of the Royal Marines under the Commando Helicopter Force. The HMA8 Lynxes have primarily an anti-submarine warfare role and anti-surface vessel role. They are able to fire the Sea Skua anti-surface missile, which was used to combat the Iraqi navy in the 1991 Gulf War. It can be armed with Stingray air-launched torpedoes and depth charges for anti-submarine warfare, as well as a machine gun. The Lynx was originally envisaged for surface combatants that were too small for the Sea King, but now equips most surface ships of the Royal Navy. The HMA.8 is also capable of anti-trafficking and anti-piracy roles when carrying boarding parties and when fitted with the FN Herstal M3M pintle mounted heavy machine gun. Upgraded maritime attack version based on Super Lynx 100. Gem 42-200 engines, BERP type main rotors and larger tail rotor of AH.7. Fitted with FLIR in turret above nose, with radar moved to radome below nose. A further upgrade was given the SATURN (Second-generation Anti-jam Tactical UHF Radio for NATO) Radio Upgrade and now incorporates SIFF. 815 NAS, based at RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron) in Somerset is the Navy's front line Lynx Naval Air Squadron. It currently comprises about 30 Lynx Mk8 SRU helicopters and is the largest helicopter squadron in western Europe. The unit has been operating the Lynx in different variants since 1981.

One of two VC-99's operated by the FAB, the aircraft are based at Babr AB and operated by the 6th Airlift Squadron (ETA-6) under 1st Special Transportation Group (ETG) along with 8 C-99s (ERJ-135BJ Legacy). The unite main role is the transport of VIP and High Ranking Military Officers under the direct command of the Air Force cabinet. The Unit is also responsible for FAB othe VIP Transport Aircraft (21 other aircraft (8 C-99 (Embraer ERJ-145), 2 VC-99C (Embraer ERJ-135BJ Legacy) , VU-55C (Gates Learjet 55), VU-35A (Gates Learjet 35)) and comprises 55 pilots current on all of the aircraft in the Unit. The VC-99 was introduced into FAB Service in 2006 and has been used extensively transporting VIP/High Ranking Military personnel all around the world. The first flight of the ERJ 145 was on August 11, 1995 and development work on the C-99 Military Transport version started soon after and is in service with 12 different Air Arms across the globe. Powered by two turbofan engines (Rolls-Royce AE 3007-A1) producing 7800lb of thrust, the crew is flown with a crew of 3 (Pilot, Co-Pilot and a Flight Attendant) with a Passenger capacity of 40 Passengers. The FAB is the largest air force in Latin America, with about 700 manned aircraft in service, and 73,000 personnel on active duty. An additional 7,655 civilian personnel are employed.

The USAF currently have around 99 of the type in service in the Search and Rescue Role, 6 of which are operated from Lakenheath. The 56th are housed by the 48th Fighter Wing also known as the Statue of Liberty Wing (The only USAF wing with both a number and a name). The Liberty Wing is made up of three combat-ready squadrons of F-15E Strike Eagle and F-15C Eagle fighter aircraft ( The 492d Fighter Squadron (F-15E) The 493d Fighter Squadron (F-15C/D) and The 494th Fighter Squadron (F-15E)). The 56th have been involved in operations in Vietnam and Libya and have operated the HH60G since 1992. The Pave Hawk is a twin turboshaft engine helicopter in service with the United States Air Force. It is a derivative of the UH-60 Black Hawk and incorporates the US Air Force PAVE electronic systems program. The HH-60G Pave Hawk's core mission is recovery of personnel under stressful conditions, including search and rescue. The U.S. Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk is operated by the Air Combat Command (ACC), U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), Air Education and Training Command (AETC), the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) and the Air National Guard (ANG). All HH-60Gs have an automatic flight control system, night vision goggles lighting and forward looking infrared system that greatly enhances night low-level operations. Additionally, some Pave Hawks have color weather radar and an engine/rotor blade anti-ice system that gives the HH-60G an all-weather capability.Pave Hawk mission equipment includes a retractable in-flight refueling probe, internal auxiliary fuel tanks, two crew-served (or pilot-controlled) 7.62 mm miniguns or .50-caliber machine guns and an 8,000 pound (3,600 kg) capacity cargo hook. To improve air transportability and shipboard operations, all HH-60Gs have folding rotor blades.

10 of the type are in US Service with the SOCOM (Special Operations Command) but are operated by U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (a component of SOCOM) will operate the aircraft. The PZL M28 Skytruck (Westernised Version of the AN28) is a Polish STOL light cargo and passenger plane, produced by PZL Mielec, as a development of licence-built Antonov An-28. Powered by two US-built Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turboprop engines each generating about 1,100 horsepower, the aircraft are operated by the 318th Special Operations Squadron based at Cannon Air Force Base. The M28 is equipped with a large door on the rear of the aircraft that facilitate's quick loading and off-loading in the field as well as parachute jumpers. The aircraft are capable of carrying up to 18 passengers or three tons of cargo. The 15 ton M-28 is priced at about half that of a comparable Western aircraft. The M-28 can cruise at 270 kilometers an hour for about five hours per sortie. The US have been operating the type in service since June 2009 and have been seen in use in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The M28 has been exported to the US, Nepal, Colombia, Venezuela, Vietnam and Indonesia and is flown with a crew of 3. The aircraft is installed with an improved Honeywell avionics suite for VFR / IFR day and night and all weather operations. The PZL M28 Skytruck, completed its maiden flight on 24 July 1993. The limited production delivered 39 aircraft for export markets by 2006.
