but over at Mildenhall in johns field in the afternoon it was unusable even trying to log onto FC was hard work .

C-GY.co.uk has closed unfortunately. ADSB exchange is probably the best free service for military tracking as its unfiltered. However the best service in my opinion is 360radar, there is an article on our website about it which gives all the info. If you don't feed data you can get a subscription for about £20 a year and there is a good Facebook group for discussion and support. I really would recommend setting up a receiver if you can, it can be done for as little as £5 if you have a computer to use it with it and if you feed to 360radar you will get free access so it can work out cheaper than a subscription. Also you can feed to other services like FR24, Planefinder & Flightaware and they offer premium accounts for free to data feeders.

Software wise you could also install PlanePlotter, it's a little more complicated that the other web based platforms but it's kind of the go to software solution, although only do it if your confident with IT.

Then you can also go here, even though it says lowflyingwales it's actually now called 360radar but that makes no difference so that's fine. Before you get a dongle you can click that you don't have a receiver to get more info, but you can also click I do have a receiver to get instructions on setting it up. When you are up and running you get free access to 360radar:

It's simply the best network in the uk to join, Phil over there will help you if you need it and you can use it anywhere. If you want a trial account he can also set you up. Once you have joined us you can continue on and install PlanePlotter if you want. Search Google for "PlanePlotter by COAA" for the software and "PlanePlotter video tutorials by Nic Storey" for instructions.

Nothing mate, I just think that it's long been overtaken since the advent of VRS. It's Windows only, desktop based, clunky, needs a lot of configuration and basically - old fashioned.

Yeah, I wanted to balance my message a bit, although 360radar wins hands down I thought I better put another option. PlanePlotter seems to be dying off now VRS is being developed and adopted by people who really want to build a great network. PlanePlotter is a pain for support for starters, they use Yahoo Groups as a discussion service and it's almost impossible to navigate round topics and sub topics. I mistakenly signed up to get an email every time someone posted on the board, it quickly overloaded me and after several attempts to change my preferences it's still sending me every message, fortunately I used a disposable email address so I've just left it to it. Then some emails from COAA have been quite rude, sarcastic comments and the like. A lot of times they just tell you to check the help files and wiki when you have been reading it for hours, using complicated text search terms and getting nowhere. Lots of people I have come across have said the same. Another problem are the forced updates, they send you emails everytime they bring out a new update to tell you off for "using an out of date version" I was using RTL1090 and they banned me from MLAT until I changed to dump1090 which for some reason reduced my Mode-S messages to 20% of what they were but they don't support either so would not help when it came to fixing it. I had also spent well over 100 hours investing time into programming the beamfinder feature which was great at giving you locations when only your receiver is picking something up, however when they changed to dump1090 it completely killed the accuracy and effectively binned my copious research into nearly every primary radar station in the uk, but again no help. I just feel for the hours and hours you put into PlanePlotter your work can just be rendered useless with a click of the fingers!

It is unfiltered but it won't show everything as it depends on signals being received just like a mobile phone network you have blackspots. There are different transponder types but 95% of Mil traffic that are visible do not send their location, instead it has to be worked out by Multilateration (MLAT) so the same signal needs to be received by four or more ground stations. Unlike civil airliners that transmit their location and only need to be received by one ground station. ADSBex tend to get their MLAT data from Planefinder or Flightaware (can't remember which of the top of my head) so accuracy and delay can be an issue. I will upload a comparison chart of different services for you in a bit.
